Strangest celebrity encounter you've had?

Here's my latest celebrity encounter with Mr Marcus Miller Saturday night. Stayed for both shows. This picture was taken some time after midnight.

I'm the fat white guy.

I don't remember if I've posted this on TalkBass before or not, so here goes anyway..

Back in the ealy '90's I was working at the Disneyland Hotel doing some security work for the Disney Corp. I was standing 'watch' at the foot of the stairs leading up to the monorail platform when this guy about my age approaches me.. "Yes Sir?" I ask this vaugely familar face. "Can ya help me get this wheelchair up to the platform?" (disabled accommodations were not that common yet) So I told him "lets go!" and we manhandled that wheelchair with an older, frail gentleman in it, up the stairs to the platform so they could catch the monorail.. Now I noticed the guy keep smiling at me like he had a secret.. so I bite: "yeah.. do I know you?" I asked? He sez:"Who am I?" (I was sure by then I'd seen him on TV) "Gosh, I'm really, really sorry, but I just can't place you".. He then caught the monorail with the older man whom I assume was his dad.. a couple of years later I finally made the connection when I watched "Wayne's World" .. Duhhh... I had been chatting with Mike Myers himself.. .. :smug:

I was working security at a Phil Collins concert. I was running between two tour buses to get from one end of the parking lot to another. As I got to the front of the bus, the door started to open, so I pivoted my body sideways to still squeeze through. Right as I got to the door, a man steps out and I laid him out like a LB hitting a RB on a blitz.

I picked myself up off the ground and went to check on the other person.....there was little Phil Collins laying on the ground a few feet away from me cussing me out. He was about half my size, so all he could do was yell at me. :D

-Mike
This one made me chuckle, I can just imagine lil' Phil on the ground. (I'd consider that minor payback for his making '80s radio that much more intolerable.) Wait, he didn't yell "Sususudio!"?

This wasn't a big deal to me, but it was to my girlfriend at the time:

Some of you may know that I was in a little known band ages ago called Dead Hand System, who were friends/coworkers/conspirators with another little known band named Nine Inch Nails. They would hang with us, we would hang with them, they would give us free microphones, and we would record our stuff at Nothing Studios, yada yada yada. I had gotten to know Trent Reznor well enough, but I kept this on the down low most of the time because I knew he didn't like to be bothered much.

The funny story is about a concert I attended a few years back. My favorite metal band of all time, Meshuggah, was opening for Tool in Baton Rouge. I took my girlfriend with me and we set up shop right next to the mixer and were waiting for the show to start. A few minutes in and I feel a tap on my shoulder, and it's Trent Reznor along with a few friends and bandmates from the studio. My girlfriend is dumbfounded - I try to introduce her and she can't say a word. Trent ended up hanging out with us for the rest of the show, but I couldn't get my girl to say one word to him. She was shaking the whole time, and kept whispering to me, "THAT'S TRENT REZNOR!" over and over again. Heh... funny what famous encounters will do to people.

Now, here's one that actually made me nervous. I was working part time in a little music store on Haight St. in San Francisco, and I had developed a bit of a reputation as the pedal geek. Well, when Joe Satriani (and his son - no slouch on guitar either) came in looking for pedals, everybody referred him to me. We talked a bit about what he was looking for, and we decided to plug a few things in. I go to hand Joe a guitar, when he says, "How about you play it and I'll just listen." Oh, Judas! Joe Satriani just asked ME to play guitar in front of him! What the hell am I going to do? I'm not much of a guitarist (more of a rhythm player fingerpicking kind of guy, which isn't helpful when trying out distortion pedals), so I ended up just playing a few power chords. Normally I don't get all hot and bothered when I meed famous people, but playing guitar in front of Joe Satriani scared the bejezus out of me, and my hands were shaking like a leaf.

And that's about all I got.

#2 in a series.
12 or so years ago I ran into Max Weinberg at a Discovery Zone in Freehold, NJ. I knew the director of the Conan O'Brien show, so struck up a conversation with him while our kids played in the habi-trail. Not the most exciting guy I've met.

Just what the title says. Funny, weird or whatever.

I've got a couple but I thought I'd start off with the story from my drummer that prompted this thread.

About five years ago, my drummer, his girlfriend and his parents were in Las Vegas for a weekend. On Saturday he and his Dad decide to go see Bruce Willis And the Accelerators (don't ask me, I mock him regularly for this) and are enjoying the show but they keep noticing this skinny guy with a mohawk running around the stage. He's getting water, he's taking pictures, he's talking to Bruce between songs etc. A bit strange, but whatever.

After the show my drummer and his dad have a late night dinner in one of the casino steak houses. While eating they spot this same guy walking with three or four women and a couple dudes. So my drummer flags him down and says, "hey we saw you at the show. You looked a bit out of place, are you a roadie?". The guy says no, that he's a friend of Bruce's and helps him out a bit when he's in town, but actually he's a musician himself, a drummer. My drummer says he is too and they talk a bit. Finally, my drummer asks what kind of band he plays in. He responds, "we sound a lot like Blink 182." My drummer makes a weird face and then says, "oh, I don't know if you want to sound like them. I think their music sucks."

Mr. Mohawk (who is of course actually Travis Barker from Blink 182) leans in and says, "I make more money than you'll ever dream of" and walks away with his hangers on.

Pretty much exactly the douche like response I would have expected.

i don't find that douche-like. i'd respond in a similar way if someone said that my band sucks to my face.

When I was at NAMM, I was stalked by Jauqo. Everywhere I went, I'd turn my head and he was there. It didn't bother me much, accept that he kept sniffing my shoes and drooling.

He did that to you too? I thought I was the only one. I feel so cheap now. :scowl:

Ok, he didn't do that to me, I was relieved at first but now I am kinda insulted......:eyebrow:

It's the gut Jauqo isn't it? :help:

When I rode It's a Small World at Disney World Jason Newstead was riding a few boats back.

One time I walked into the bathroom at Milwaukee Airport. There was a dude with dreads standing there and another guy standing at the mirror applying facepaint a la the Ultimate Warrior. I grew a tail and then walked out and said to the face-painter, "Sorry to take a dump in your dressing room." Then I asked what he was preparing for and they said, "Bratwurst eating contest." Then the guy with the dreads says, "Where do all the loose women hang out in Milwaukee?" I said, "I don't know, I'm from Texas." Then he said, "Ok, where do all the slutty Texas women hang out when they're visiting Milkwaukee."

When I got home I looked at some competitive eating website and the guys I was talking to were "Eater X" and "Crazy Legs Conti". Kind of a stretch to call them "celebrities" but it was a strange encounter.

Maybe I'm just projecting because I imagine that Travis Barker is a douche. I think it's a good projecting though. On the other hand, I KNOW my drummer is an a-hole.

Ok, here's a sport's related one from me. My sophomore year in college Steve Mariucci became coach of the Cal football team (NFL fans will know him as the former coach of the 49ers and Lions) and I was walking to class when he pulls over in his car and flags me down. It was his first day on campus and he wanted directions to the to a parking lot for a meeting on campus. So I give him directions, including turning down Durant street. The problem was, Durant is a one way in the opposite direction, which I didn't think about because I'm always walking around campus rather than driving. Just as I realize what I did, I hear tires squealing and horns honking. No collision, but I'm guessing he wasn't real happy with my directions. I put my head down and walked swiftly to class.

Oops. . .

You do know that I literally ran into the Ultimate Warrior walking out of a bathroom (as he was walking in) at Mitchell Field (Milwaukee's main airport) around 1990 or so. No lie.

I was home on leave- I seem to recall it was cold and I was on leave from Panama, wearing my Class A's and overcoat- walked right into a chest full of fringe...

I'm totally not kidding.
