Strap it on! Favorite Bass Strap

I recently picked up a few guitar straps from Couch Straps (the cat one and the vw gti one)....gotta say I love these straps. After going through 3 Monocase Betty straps (they literally fell apart after a couple months), I find these Couch ones really comfortable and very well built.

After trying out straps from Ernie Ball, Mono, Gruv Gear, Levy's, and Planet Waves, I finally settled on the 4" Italia leather strap.

I'm still using the plain old 2" nylon thing with leather ends. I prefer the Ernie Ball straps because the tabs fit really tight on my strap buttons.

The local pawn shop parts out accessories when they buy in guitars & basses. If I see a strap I like on one of their guitars, I ask how much, got this one for $4:

2" wide, feels like a seat belt

I've gotten all my straps from there (four) & the priciest one was a leather one with a lightning bolt on it, $10.

I like Heistercamp from the U.K. Great straps and they last forever. I've had two of mine for years and years at this point.

Couch all the way. I got the Couch Dark Brown Western strap to offset my cherry red Guild JS-2. It's a great strap, very comfortable, and minimizes the bit of nosedive of the bass because it's so heavy duty and well made. Not cheap, but worth it.

4" Italia for me, that's after 35 years of whatever 2" padded nylon strap.

I got the same strap for my Ric-ified Gibson, to complete my 1/2-@$$ed Lemmy tribute. I have some of their seat belt straps too. Super solid.

Levy's Leather black leather strap. I use one strap with Dunlop Straploks for most of my basses. Comfortable and durable.

Levy's 3" cotton strap. Wide enough for good support, soft and comfortable.
I also change the length a lot so I always have one that's adjustable on the fly, leather ones are no good for that.

I love this strap and the other three W&W I own. Affordable and good quality. I'm sure someone will chime in about how they are an American company that sells Chinese straps. If that's true I don't care because they are that nice.

Tight fit over the strap buttons is top priority. But the 2" nylon straps cut my aging shoulder like a knife.

I purchase straps as I buy basses. Each one has a strap. I buy the brand that I like when I buy the bass. In general like a soft non-padded leather. When I was younger I liked Franklin Straps. They are soft and reasonably priced as decent quality leather straps go. I switched to Italia Leathers after buying a few Franklins. Mostly because I prefer the look of the Italia over Franklin. My last strap purchase was a custom order from Moxie and Oliver. If you have never checked out Moxie and Oliver's products the lady making them does some cool leather work. All three brands have been comfortable IMO and held up to years of use.

FWIW I also always use Dunlop Dual Design strap locks. Straps are about both comfort and security to me. The strap locks have never let me down. They also provide a nice place to run a right angle cable for side jacked basses.
