Straplocks and String choices

Never trusted straplocks, I've always used Grolsch washers or now Fender strapblocks, simple, cheap, safe

+1 on the beer locks.

I have never had any issues, and I like that I that i am repurposing something.

A lot of people I play with always make positive comments.

And you also get free beer with the purchase.

I picked up some nice shiny gold a ballets with my nice shiny gold tbird and they are spot on. I used to have a set on my jazz too but seem to have taken them out sometime and have filed them for safekeeping-I just can't remember where! The only issue is not with the screw itself, more the angle of the screw on the original strap lock. It had a slight angle which, with the extra width of the Schaller base, has meant that to screw it right in has left a slight indentation in the wood. It's not a problem as I don't intend to remove them, but I know it's there :(

I've always used Schallers, have worked just fine. I've also done the "washer through the button" move, but that locks the strap to that particular bass until you unscrew it.

Same here, been using Schallers for a few years with no issues.
Before that I screwed the strap down using the button and a washer.
You couldn't forget your strap unless you forgot your bass, but naturally I had to have a strap for each bass.

Thank you guys, last question, what's the difference between the original dunlop and the dual design? And i like the orange washer thingy looks funky. As for tje strings i got a deal on craigslist. getting a mix bunch of roto66, prosteels and xl nickels, if i have some extra i'll get some dr hi or lo.

Iirc the only ones not mentioned yet are the Ernie Ball Superlocks.

Tried Schallers, washers kept coming loose midset.
Tried Dunlops, prefer their set in model only.

Haven't had a Grolsch in over 30 years but back in the days of playing six nights a week they worked just fine.

On different basses and straps, I use Hennessey, Loxx, Dunlop, Schaller, Grolsch, Dimarzio clip-locks, locking straps from LM and Planet Waves, and bolted-on straps.

The Hennessey's work well, but feel a little cheap. You can use a regular strap with the pins, but it won't stay on well.

The Loxx are the best in terms of locking and ease of use, but you absolutely can't use a regular strap. Plus, they are the only ones that I had to cut the strap to make them fit. The strap fits nice and close to the body of the bass.

The Dunlop's are good and can use a regular strap, but if you are careless, it is possible to think you have them locked when you don't. (I always give them a little tug to make sure.) the dual designs or classics have the best pins for a regular strap, but with the locks, the strap is oddly far from the bass body. This hurts nothing, but looks funny if you care about such things. Dual designs do look like a regular strap pin, but the are a very large pin. The classics are harder to find, but a little prettier pin.

Schallers are secure, but can come loose from the strap and I have had noise between the pin and the lock come though my amp. The coming loose problem is easily fixed, but if you experience it, they fail open instead of failing secure.

Grolsch are great, but a little hard to get off and on and easy to lose.

Dimarzio clip locks replace the strap pin with a clip, which is secure, but I worried the clip would damage the finish while in the case. Plus, a regular strap is out of the question.

The LM locking strap eventually wore to the point it had potential to pop off the pins. I also modified it with some mole skin so that the plastic surface that rubs the bass wouldn't scratch the finish.

I really like the Planet Lock straps, but the strap selection is a little limited, and there are some basses where the pin placement prevents you from using them. I always keep one or two of these with me, though, because they are pretty close to a universal fit. The design has improved over time, and the surface that can contact the instrument is now soft rubber instead of hard plastic. I am not sure if the rubber will damage nitro finishes or not.

The bolt on strap is a good option is you never want to remove the strap again. I use this approach on an old, road weary bass where I needed a very long bolt to get the strap/pin to stay in the wood.

I think the question was about pins for a thunderbird. I use the Hennessey's on my 'birds. The top pin is on the back of the bass, and I chose the model where the strap part is fairly flat. Loxx would be a good choice here as well. Dunlop would be my third choice here. Because of the position of this pin, I could see a Schaller "poking" you, as mentioned in this thread. If the front pin is on the end of the body behind the neck, the Planet Lock strap won't fit. On my NR bird, though, I use Dunlops with classic pins, just becuase the classic pins look most like the original pins, and I wanted a wider strap than is available from Planet Waves.

Strings on a bird....the humbuckers are a little muted in the top end compared to the "brash" tone of a single coil. I would look at a steel string as opposed to nickel, especially if you play finger style. I think it is hard to go wrong with fat beams, but I also think you have to experiment a little to see what works well with a particular bass. I haven't tried them, but I recall GHS having some fairly bright strings; I may try those next on one of my thunderbirds.

Thanks a lot, I just got a dunlop dual design, pretty solid! As for the strap I use the planet waves 3 inch padded strap, now my bird feels more balance, I tried putting on a schaler (thanks to the "understanding" clerk at GC) but yeah it really pokes my gut as the front strap pin is located at the heel of the neck and i had to pull my bird away and it look wakward, the dunlop was pretty much the best choice I had, but yeah it kinda feels far but comparing it to the alternatives, I got it, As for the strings, I got a "combo" set from craigslist, XL nickels, prosteels and a bonus DrHibeams, I just installed the nickels and sounded like heaven, I play finger style, no picks I don't slap much but I'm pretty much excited to put the prosteels too! I'd keep an eye out for GHS and Black beauts still just in case! Thanks again!

EDIT: I just found out a local deli in our area has grolsch beer and bought 4 bottles, I'll save 2 of the washers for my other guitar, and keep the other 2 bottles for refill. Cheers guys!
