Street Racing

I like American Muscle, but I don't understand the glorified street racing mentality these days....I did some pretty dumb things when I was sixteen, but it always sucks when you pull up to a stoplight after driving like a moron, and see a nice family with a couple of kids in the back seat...that really hit home for me..

I still love cars, but I have more people tailgating me these days..enjoy your car, I say, but use common sense...do you really have to risk innocent people's lives to give yourself gratification? Never.

...I live in Florida, and enjoy driving the 50 miles to the coast to go night fishing...I know it seems lame, but that's my way to get rid of my driving jones...plus I refer as my bass as my "hotrod":eyebrow:

I have a 1998 Plymouth Neon SOHC 2.0 liter 5 speed.
Current mods:
cold air intake, 52mm throttle body (stock is 49mm), dynomax muffler (NO fart-can, it looks stock only with a better flow), hi-rate lowering springs (1.5 inch drop all around), Booger solid shifter bushings, Maddog short throw shifter (33% reduction left/right and forwards/backwards), Booger solid bobble strut, Deyeme solid mounts.

Have in the mail: Apex'i SAFC II

Coming this spring: Crane #14 cam with AEM adjustable cam gear, AFX or Kirk long-tube header, milled head for compression, Mopar performance computer.

With all that I should be in the mid 14's. I am in the high 15's stock. I don't know where my car is right now though.

All this and I'll still be making mid to high 30's for gas mileage on the highway. Right now I'm in the low 40's. :hyper: :cool: :D ;)

low 40s for mpg !? must be the new math, that figure is higly suspect. considering most hybrids don't even claim that.

I'm pretty sure a 2006 Civic EX gets 38 highway, and the older civics with small displacement motors easily got 40 mpg. Remember the stately Eage Summit? I think I read somewhere that car got the best non-hybrid mileage ever. Somewhere in the mid 40's.

I did some searching, maybe it wasn't the Summit. Either way, it's not that unreasonable.

SECOND edit: Here's a link with info regarding the EPA mileage rating. With a stick shift, it's pretty easy to go higher than that with conservative driving.

Nope, still going on in my area. Sometimes it seems like 1/5 of the cars around me (not just Hondas, but all cars) have something that they feel makes it perform better, especially sports exhaust (or resonator exhausts).

And there are the idiots who pull up at lights, rev, and race. One of those splattered himself against a tree over the weekend, severely injuring his brother (passenger) in the process. The other guy was arrested, and will be charged with 2nd degree murder...not that I agree with that charge, but whatever.

Not in NYC, seen tons of them here, been trying to fix up my new ride (BMW 330ci), not really for street racing, although if I go crazy enough I'll take it onto a track, mainly small things to make it faster, and more fun for myself.

Murder? Damn yo, that's pretty harsh.

Over here I haven't seen a "nice" rice rocket in quite some time. I used to see cool looking cars like from fast and the furious, but now all that's left is a bunch of really old crappy looking Hondas with fart cans. It kind of bothers me that they think they're so cool. I can probably beat most of them in a race and to top it off, I'm a better person.

Sorry, but we're gonna need proof to believe either of those claims.

A friend of mine has an '82 Civic (with the Hondamatic transmission, no less) that used to be red and years of sitting in the sun has faded it to a nice pinkish grey on top down to a deep fuschia near the bottom. I always wanted to weld an old coffee can onto the muffler and go cruisin'. We never got around to it, but he did install an air horn. Now that's what I call a pimped out ride.

Yeah, it's pretty harsh. It sounds so much more like a manslaughter-type of thing, though I'm not well versed on the laws, and it is California after all.

Driving from Columbia, MO. to Bloomington, IN. I went 285.5 miles and I only used 6.225 gallons. It's a manual with a small engine, all driving on I-70. The transmission also matters. I have the 3.55 ratio tranny instead of the 3.94. And before you all start talking about me just letting the gas *click* and counting it there; no, I don't do that, I always fill beyond where the pump stops.

I get low to mid 30's driving around town. The fact that I have a SINGLE overhead cam also helps, the DOHC's don't get as good mileage around town. And we won't even talk about how horrid the automatics are with gas mileage (torque converter has to be one of the most inefficiently designed things I've seen for smaller engines).

No laughing here. It's cool that you're modding your car. Just please leave the fartcans and the top fuel wings to the Honda crowd.

Mid 14's would be cool. Post some timeslips when you get them.

My 94 Plymouth Colt (Read: $200 winter trash) with the earthshaking 1.5 and a five speed knocks down low 40's on the highway.

Too bad I can't say the same for the Camaro. I'm lucky to get 8 mpg from that.

My '88 Ex-Police Mustang gets 270 miles to a tank(15.5 gallons)...

Not many people believe this, but the car only weighs 2900 pounds, and it's a manual...MPGs on the window stickers of these cars used to read: 22 city/30 highway...nice mix of power and mileage, esp. with the ridiculous fuel prices nowadays..

I've always thought "street" racing was pretty dumb. I mean, there are too many risks; and your taking risks with other people than just yourself. I'll be honest, I have burned some rubber now and then. I wanted to show a few idiots that, just because they drive a Honda, they aren't the fastest thing on the road.

I was actually thinking about picking up an '88 supra from a my drummer. It's a turd right now; but I figure I could do some things to it and take it to the tracks. Rear wheel drive cars definitely don't fare well here in MN...
