'62 VW bug, 2,0lt subaru wrx sti engine,HKS twin-turbo,custom made transmission,and a LOT of work!!!We worked it out last summer while i was working in a garage,the owner went to Sant-pod UK.I heard something about high 8's on the 1/4.I was in it in the test ride(street legal FFS!)and it did a huge wheelie!!!Freakin' scary:crying: Though,long live Herbbie!!!:bassist:

I am BUT as u may know you need to be very good at that stuff and I dont have anyplace to do it. I really don't like doing it on the streets because of how crazy and uncontrolable your car wants to get.

Once in awhile at 3:00am when noones on the road and everything is clear I'll get sidways. Every now and then I go in an empty parking lot and do the sidways thing again but it puts so much stress on your car and eats your tires so quick I try to keep it to a minimum.

As for j-turns I really need to stop doing that to, its just as bad as drifting:scowl: .

I was actually pulled over a few weeks ago under the suspicion I was street racing. Turns out some old lady with too much time on her hands spotted my car speeding, assumed I was racing the car next to me (who was also driving about 5 mph over the speed limit) and felt it was her duty to report me to the police. Sure, 15-20 mph over I understand. But five?! Give me a break.


Long story short cop didn't see anything happen so he had to let me go. She made me late to work, I hope she's happy.

Oh... Hell... Yes...

Before I sold my '84 Monte (350cid. and around 325hp ttrw) I used to go sliding around my neighborhood early in the morning (around 2 am) so not many cars were out... I quit trying to drift my boat when I was driving home from school oneday, bumper to bumper traffic and I spun 180* with cars on all sides of me !!!! Thank God I knew(know) how to control a car, or I would have hit like 5!

I did alot of stupid stuff in my car, including street racing, and illegal Mph runs up and down US1 through Titusville and Rockledge... Pulled about a 120 and no cops saw me!!! But when I hit 5 over, theyre all over me!!!

Since then I have grown up (only about a year ago, lol.) I had a humbling experience in my new Grand Am (was hit from behind, blamed and given a ticket, and to top it all off, my insurence company didn't file my paperwork the two days before, so it has yet to be fixed, and it's all coming from my pocket too! Also, my insurence company gave out my information!!! I hate them so much!!) so I try to stay grounded. I also refuse to buy a radar detector, because the moment I do, I'll go and get ballsy untill I hear it screech, and I want to stay away from getting in anymore trouble on the road... Untill I get my S14, then it'll all happen again, lol.

They actually have it set up so that you will have a chance. All cars are put into classes of similar vehicles, and you compete against them. So you shouldn't have to worry about being up against a Porsche or something.
You don't have to be a member to race (at least here) but it does cost more if you aren't. It's $20 for non members here. You have to get there pretty early and register. Then you can walk the course and get an idea of how it is. It's a good idea to grab an experienced member and get them to give you a few tips. You will also need a helmet. If you don't have one, they probably have some loaners.
Also there usually is a school offered at the begining of the season. It's worth doing if you have the time and $.

I'm BIG TIME into the import scene, so first off please no one flame me for it lol. I don't drive a riced out civic.

Street racing is bigger than ever, with more fatalities than ever. It doesn't even matter if people have fast cars anymore; they still race. I hate to say it but I think the sole reason for this explosion is the FAst and the Furious movies which exposed this sub-culture. That movie exaggerated everything that REAL "tuners" stand behind, and was a true perversion of the hobby.

Unfortunately, too many kids took this movie into their own hands and try to live their lives like it. The real enthusiasts do their racing on the track. I hear so many stories every day on my car forums about street racing, it's just lame. It's one thing to endanger your own life; fine. But when you involve other people it's absolutely intolerable.

YES, streetracing is out there and bigger than ever, and law enforcement is passing new laws to increase the grip the police have on it.

Man. I'd be so into building a tuner and racing it on the track. I just don't know that I'd have the self control to constantly monitor myself when driving on the highway.

The main reason I wanted to start this thread was the fact that my best friend is thinking about opening up a small shop with a dyno track and racing strip. He asked me if I want to go in with him 50/50. I think it's a cool idea and all; but as far as an investment... I'm just not sure about it long term. It'd be a few years before we could probably do it as well.

i used to, ive been building mustangs since i was 14 though, never got into the whole import thing......and im gonna go ahead and say yeah, street racing has been slowly dying since about 2004, yes more and more people are ricing out cars, but they dont really race too much anymore...


but i still do race on a track, fastest time to date is in the 9's last year at the spring break shootout in orlando

Oh yeah, F&F is why I got out of import tuning for more than 4 years or so.. However, I'm slowly edging back in right now. I plan to start drastic mods to my Grand Am by this summer, and as soon as it's payed off, I plan on ditching it for an S14... They go pretty darn cheap in my area, and the BlueBook on my GA is $4k, so i should be set for a Silvy!

You really need to map out an idea before opening your own shop. By that I mean you need to know what type of services you're going to do and not do.

Just doing hi-perf stuff is cool, but you also need to keep day-to-day money rolling through the shop so you can make the rent and payroll. You may find yourself doing the occasional brake job and oil changes, etc to accomodate this. Unless you live in a market that really can support performance-only work, you need to consider this.

I've watched many performance shops around here come and go quickly because of this.

I used to street race when I was younger and stupider, but I am know into the import racing scene (one of the older people into it for sure) I am building an 88 Alltrac Celica for drag use, currently I have a built block with forged and balanced eerything, ported head with o/s valves and cams, sheetmetal intake, greddy t78 turbo, standalone ems fuel mods etc just got to assemble it. With good tuning should be seeing 500+ at the wheels on c16...
