String gauge and brand for 80s Peavey Dyna 4 string?

I apologize as I am new to the bass world... I'm just getting around to replacing my strings on my 80s dyna bass that I purchased here on the forum a bit ago as the current ones are beyond dead. I threw on some Labella RX 45-105 but I am having issue with the A string deadening out, probably due to the size of the slot of the nut and the string not sitting properly. Rather than getting a full setup on the thing and messing with an already previously good sounding bass, I'd rather just get strings that fit from the get go. Does anyone have any info on the recommended gauge for these basses and a recommended brand? I didn't love the tone of the Labella's from hearing the other strings that didn't dead out. This bass has the ferrite pickups if that helps at all.

Are you sure it's the problem with the nut slot itself?

First, check the A string to make sure it's wound on the tuner post in a way the last wrap coming out toward the nut is as close to the bottom as possible to ensure a sufficient break angle at the nut. 45-105 is pretty standard and it's doubtful the gauges themselves are the problem.

I appreciate the help. You were right. I had the wrap the correct the direction but I had it going from bottom to top instead of top to bottom on the peg.

Nice. So now that everything is sounding up to par how are you liking your tone with them? If it sounds good might as well keep them and get your money's worth.
