strings for a pbass

Man, I try. I try and use flats, and I just cant like them. Tone is bearable ( on teh P bass, not the J) , but the surface friction is horrible. Is that why folks say to get them good and greasy!? ;)

Well, I'd say yes, as far as frets are concerned (Ifeel the same way), but fretless is another story.

I just bought a new Fender American Std. P and the first thing I did was put a set of EB Hybrid Slinkys on it. Come to think about it, I recently put a set of .45-.100 Slinkys on my Highway One Jazz. Starting to look like a pattern, isn't it?

Slinkys seem to work for me. Now what am I going to with the two sets of TI Superalloys I've got sitting around here? I guess I'll try them on the P when the EBs wear out.

I used to like flats years ago but I'm a round-wound guy now.

I've had these on my Fender Precision since last June. I started off loving the sound, then about 1-2 months ago, they went into a significant stretching period. Why? Seasonal? I'm not sure. Anyway, during that period, the sound went from a nice thump to a dull thud. Now they've settled in again and the thump is back. I played this bass tonight and I was really into what I was hearing. There was that percussive, punchy sound with the very strong fundamental tone.

Then again... I was being pretentious and brought both my P-bass and the Spector Euro5LX to the jam session tonight. The Spector has DR Lo-Rider Nickel strings and I also love the growl I get from them. I can't help but wonder what those strings would sound like on the P bass.

LaBella Deep Talkin Flats!!!!!! if you dont like flats...learn to like em for the sake of these strings

Yes, "high quality" is what first came to mind as I was stringing up the P bass with the LaBella flats.

thanks guys. i'm a poorer man thanks to threads like these!

anyway, i picked up some of the labella deep talkin flats tonight on the way home. i've played them for about an hour and a half or so. they are definitely high quality, feel great, love the sound, thanks for the recommendation!

To answer your question, the string that comes factory tapers to a 60 at the bridge. So the bridge saddle is much higher than normal and will probably require a drop if you dont use the factory strings anymore.

As for what you should put on them, my recomendations are as follows:

For Ultra bite and growl, DR High Beams
For a smoother growl and more mids, Sadowsky Bright Nickels or DR Lo Rider Nickels.
And my personal favorite which offers a smooth tone with nice deep lows and full mids:

D'addario Chromes, 45-100 set. Just perfect for me.

Joel (or anyone), do you know if the 45-100 Chromes will fit on a new American P with the string through bridge?
