I am looking to replace the strings on my Fender, and as a newb would like some advice on good strings for funk style playing(slap and fingerstyle)

I personally haven't tried fat beams yet, but I hear a lot of great things. They aren't as bright as hi-beams, but they seem to be a very balanced string and not overly bright. If you know who Marcus Miller is, they are his signature strings. (He was Miles Davis' late bass player).
You can funk on flats ... there are so many kinds of funk, and really its about feel and attitude ...
However if you're looking for a string set that will give a crispy modern slap sound: high beams, SR2000s and Sadowsky stainless all deliver the goods in different ways.

I just put on my first set of DR high beams today and i love them. They have an awesome funky sound. When they are new they kinda have that Mark King zing to them. Pretty cool.
Any fairly bright string would be a good bet. I use Lo-Riders myself, but I'd say go out and try a few stainless steel sets.
+1 on the Fat Beams. That is what I had on my Read J when I first got it and the funk was undeniable. If only I played funk! But seriously, these seemed to be like "Marcus in a box".
I think the DR Lo Riders I have on my SR5 sound fantastic. I don't play a lot of funk but judging how well they work on the few songs I do play I think they work really well.
I had DR Lo-Riders on a Marcus Miller 4 which I liked but I put on a set of D'Addario chrome flats, which were previously on a PJ that got taken off when the DR Hi-beam flats arrived, and couldn't be happier. They're bright enough for slapping with the tone up and/or the preamp on and work great for fingerstyle with in passive mode with the tone rolled off a bit. Note I have modded my MM by adding passive tone controls.
