Ernie Ball slinkys can help accent crunch and growl a little. In their own way so do rotosound swing66 and DR neons and sunbeams. But if you dont allready have crunchy growly voiced pups, its not going to be as good as getting pups that have better growl. The more articulate pups do this better rather then muddy ones btw imo.
The differance between round and flat wound strings is the outter wrap. Round wound has a round wire wrapped around it and flats have a metal ribbon wrapped that is then ground a bit to make the surface smoother to the touch. They have different characteristics to their feel and tone. Rounds tend to be brighter and more on the trebel side, flats tend to be mellower sounding and in most cases higher tension. Remember that when you think of how you want to change you tone with strings may sound good alone but sometimes can get lost in the mix when playing in a band. Some times what sounds not so good alone sounds great when with a whole band.
