Stripped hex head polepiece...

I have somewhat recently acquired an older hex head MFD (loaded in a bass...) that had a non-moving polepiece. In the process of trying to make it budge, I inadvertantly stripped the hex hole (I think the previous owner must have tried his hand on it too, so the hole was already somewhat widened)....I have another MFD from the same era that I could switch polepieces with if I could remove the stripped one. Any ideas on how to get out the stripped one? I don't mind using something that will destroy the polepiece, as its already pretty much screwed as is. The pickup still works and sounds fine, but I like to be able to adjust it- and I don't like to look down and be irratated by it everytime I play! Why the hell didn't they stick with the slot polepieces? they are so much easier to deal with!

Easy outs are far from gentle but great at getting broken screws out.

May be too brutal for a pickup though.

Might be the ticket- I only need the polepiece to loosten and come out a little bit, then I can use a more gentle method to pull it out the rest of the way (just raise it out of the plastic cover enough to get a hold of it with some pliers or something)...any idea what size I might need? I have a really great used tool shop in town with thousands of drill bits that almost undoubtedly has some of these around...

you could try cutting a slot in it with a dremel and a small cutoff wheel...

I contemplated that, but I'm not that sure of my hand! I even had my dremel out and ready when this first happened. Maybe they make smaller cutting discs than the one I have though- mine would require a very steady hand...

No clue on the size Karl. Did you try some kinda stuff like Liquid wrench? If you can get any grip it all try that or WD-40 and put a tiny amount at the seam of the threads and let it wick in.

I think I did try a little WD-40- they put a wax potting material in the threads though that might make it not really soak down in. Can't hurt to try again though.
