Strong Feelings About Whitney Houston

I voted "I DESPISE Whitney Houston" not because I actually despise Whitney Houston, or could in fact even name one single Whitney Houston song, but simply because I always look before I vote and choose what the majority doesn't.
I completely understand and agree with most of the comments about the vocal calisthenics and some of her cheezy material...when she broke out I assumed she'd just be another over-hyped pop star, she'd sell a bunch of records and then disappear - for me there was nothing really special about the radio hits. I managed to scalp a last minute ticket to one of her early arena shows, mainly to see what the buzz was about and I figured I'd at least enjoy the opening act (Jonathan Butler).
WOW. Literal chills. I left the arena stunned and smitten. Fortunately saw her again not long after that and she killed it again. Very grateful to have witnessed a completely legit talent before things went off the rails for her. I really hoped that she'd get it together and perform well again and it kinda hurt a little to learn she was gone. Put me down for "love WH".

To me "indifferent" meant I thought she was very talented and I also thought her recordings (at least the ones I heard) were meh, except this one which was recorded when she was just working as a session vocalist:
I would say the same about a lot of very talented musicians, FWIW.
I've never liked her. It was never music I was ever into. Horrible, over produced drivel that made my skin crawl and still does.
Was she talented? Sure.
Does that affect my absolute hate for her style and others like her? No.
I remember a statement from Dolly Parton when asked about Houston's cover of Dolly's timeless classic. Dolly said something along the lines of "It made me 3 million dollars."
Now If you want to talk about classic voices then I'll throw Dolly's name in. I think quite a few of the women on the Voice blow Whitney away. The latest contestant named Janice, now that's a voice!

Yes, please do. I don’t know why, because I’m completely indifferent to Whitney H. (respect her 100%), but I feel there is going to be some sort of mind blowing revelation to the reveal that is going to make me rethink my life choices.

I LOVE Whitney Houston. I was in high school or first year of college when she came out with her first album. I video taped Saving All My Love and watched it a million times. I was so excited because she was a real singer and I loved that about her. She wasn't produced, she could actually sing!
When in college, before she got really big she did the concert at our home coming. I found out one of my friends in college grew up in her neighborhood and they called her "Nippy", which I found out later was her nick name.
I mainly liked her because of her voice, though I thought she was beautiful too. It was absolutely heart braking the drug addition and her untimely death.

I would suggest anyone with a passing interest in the late Whitney Houston see the Brit documentary 'Whitney Houston: Can I Be Me?'.
For me, she was one more heartbreaking example of why I love and truly hate the music business at the same time. The object lessons that the life offers are all cautionary tales, and in so many cases, deadly. People are people, frail humans, and they will seek whatever balm soothes the terrors and heartbreak, but alcohol and drugs are tickets straight to hell, and unfortunately as in her case, you get there before you're dead. At least you won't be alone once you're there . . . .
For me, she was one more heartbreaking example of why I love and truly hate the music business at the same time. Way back I had a part time job doing security at a local outdoor music venue.
Whitney came to town and I worked her show. Part of the local promotion was a radio station gave away a VIP package that included a meet and greet with Ms. Houston. I was basically a fly on the wall backstage watching an access door used by some of the crew to get to a trailer out back but it was close enough to the action I saw Miz thang dishing misery on basically anyone who got within earshot about whatever popped into her head. She was in the process of dressing down some unlucky soul when someone walked up and told here the VIP winners where here to meet her.
It was like flipping a switch, she turned around with a big smile and greeted those contest winners like they were the only thing she had to think about. Gushing about the ladies' beautiful outfits and posing for photo after photo. Their little clatch lased about 20 minutes before the lucky winners were escorted to their front row seats and Ms. Houston went immediately back to wicked witch of the west mode. I figured it's her show to run as she sees fit and I did wonder what her employee turnover rate might be, but I was very impressed with her ability to go from full on witch to happy, genuine, gracious host for a couple of random fans in the blink of an eye, then revert back to witch mode just as quickly.

i voted meh. her voice was awesome, her songs mostly didn't do anything for me, and until her tragic death, i knew little to nothing about her. i love dolly's i will always love you despite not being a big country fan - i felt that ms. houston added smaltz to her version and made it over-dramatic where the original version was beautiful partly because of its intimacy in the first part.
I will always love you is what she's best known for, and I like Dolly's original version better.
