Double Bass Strugglesville - too many variables

Ben,
The Schertler isn’t actually a piezo, it’s a electrostatic, that has minimal voltage running out to the pickup. Since your running the Stat B >Schertler Pre> Headway>Trickfish you have three preamps and two EQ sections. Each of those sections add noise. The Stat B Preamp is proprietary. You have to use it with the Stat B or one of the other Schertler Preamps. The Realists and the Headway work well with each other, especially if you bypass the preamp and use the effects loop in on the Trickfish. Just my take though. The Schertler into the Trickfish is your simplest option.

You can use the phantom power (I think 11 volts) that is available on channel 1 of the EBD-2 and EBD-2 HE and set the switch to tip. That Schertler preamp I have has issues. Something was shorting from the board to the metal cover, but even after correcting that it still had noise, plus it had a nasal honk when going directly to an amp/ It always had noise and had a nasal honk. The Headway corrected that.

The Remic Green is a disappointment. It is too boomy/thuddy like an over hyped EV RE20. The Red is awesome but not really for live but I did get away with using a mic wind screen. I am just using a modified ATM-350 (Hyper Cardioid pattern ) and I have 2 basses that I use this mic with - one I use the Stat B and the other one has a Full Circle. My Stat-B is the two pickup model. It is dialed in. It is better than the Full Circle. MBOL is reached when you are not sure if you are plugged in. But that is short lived once you have a drummer. That is why piezos and contact mics are here to stay. I embrace what comes out of them. And for the salsa band, I still use my BP-100 and the preamp it came with. I had this since the early 90's. It just cuts and is very feedback resistant. Not the best sound soloed probably the worst but with the band it works.
