Struggling to find Chorus bliss

I've actually owned a Waterfall, but I've never been happier with any other chorus than the "could be called pedestrian" TC Electronics Corona chorus. It has a lot of choices already in it, and you can download a bunch of new Toneprints as well as the Toneprint editor to make your own. There's a lot of freedom to tweak to your heart's content. It also has the all-important blend knob.
There's a Melvin Lee Davis Toneprint that pretty much covers the late 70's/early 80's subtle/not corny Anthony Jackson vibe I was looking for, which is worth the price of admission alone.

Have you tried the Diamond Halo (full name, Diamond Pedals HCH1 Halo Chorus)?
As you and other have noted, there are many flavors of chorus. If you're into sweet, sweet, superfine analog chorus (it is good), may I recommend the Halo. It's big, and it isn't cheap. But it is good.

A chorus that does not modulate? Yeah, I want that.
It's more useful than you may think. OP did say he wanted transparent without warping the tone
My personal favorite is the discontinued Ibanez sc10 or bc10(same thing to my ears), it has a nice sparkling tone that sounds alot like the modern tech21 boost/chorus (except no boost), they can be had for cheap on eBay....
ive tried a few, and this one is the most consistent among activate/passive basses, it does subtle but I use it for 80's tones
or the boss ce2b is real warm, same circuitry as the famed ce2 except a clean blend and much cheaper, runs at 12 volts... But I preferred the Ibanez by a long shot

I quite like the Ibanez CS-9. I picked up a used one from the '80s after listening to some recordings made with it (maybe some Neil Jason stuff). Nice warm sound, and I also prefer to not crank the effect. Along with the built-in chorus on my old GK MBE-150 combo, it's my fave so far.
the reason I got a sc10 was because how badass the cs9 sounded, Ibanez made/still makes great stuff!!
I am just kidding around. Chorusing, by definition, is a modulation effect.
Almost shocked it hasn't been mentioned. THE Chorus pedal is the Carl Martin Bass Chorus. His pedals are beyond phenomenal.
I have never loved Chorus but that pedal changed my mind. They are a bit pricey but well worth it.

The waterfall bass, the Mxr bass deluxe, and the strymon ola are my top 3

Try a flanger perhaps. I was never happy with any chorus until I tried a flanger or a phaser.
Boss BF-2 would be my recommdation for Flanger. EH small stone for phasers.

I'm really enjoying the SA Orbital. Lots of tweaking you can do, including the ability to effect only the higher frequencies (to taste). And, you've also got chorus, flanger, phasers, vibes...I'm sure you could find something on there that fits for you!
I currently use the MXR Bass Chorus Deluxe. It's a good pedal, but it's not a great pedal. It'll do what you're after in a relatively cheap and small package, but it always creates a volume boost even with a flat EQ.
I briefly owned the Iron Ether Polytope. Cool sounds, but it hyped the high end so much when engaged, regardless of settings, that I just couldn't get along with it. It also seemed to "want" to do whacky sounds more than subtle, shimmery sounds.
The Tech 21 Bass Boost Chorus is my favorite, but it won't fit on my board, so it's a non-starter.

The Boss CE-5 I took from an old guitarist has served me well 
. As in, I haven't been GASing for anything else............and I always have bad GAS.

Another vote for Tech21 Boost Chorus Bass here ... you can get the traditional modulated chorus or a detuned effect without modulation (my choice).
