Thanks all, it's a fun spot...tie lines everywhere, all my gear in one place. I just need to iron out the bugs. The console is a custom early 70's nightmare with no panning, terrible bussing, and channels that all sound different from each other and have not pleasant noise characteristics. It was likely a vanity purchase...it came from Muscle Shoals, and Electric Lady before that. It could be fun, but needs massive work. I'd rather get it out of there and put in a small API.

Fender TV bass combo is a total surprise. Fender gave it to me to try, and I fell in love with it. Not only on the M83 album, but on every song on the upcoming Garbage. It's really good for recording. I don't know what it is, but it's really cool. Has lots of "note" in the sound, and takes pedals very well.

Best,
J

Out of curiosity, are you using the 10" or 15" for recording? I'm guessing... 15" from your well documented advocation of your Ampegs, and that seems to make a lot of sense to me, but I haven't played with this Fender yet.

I'm super intrigued by these guys. Gotta find one to check out locally. Kind of slow now, but I might have to get one in the new year.

Thank you, gang! That Bassman is the 15" and it sounds excellent. There's bomb pizza nearby. Great restaurants in the Silverlake area of LA. Yes, Purple makes great stuff...but my Retro 176 has taken over as the ideal vocal comp. What an amazing piece that one is.

Btw: Mike Schuppan, who some of you may remember as my touring tech from NIN, is also my assistant and engineer, etc. He's been helping me get everything wired and working properly.

Those TV Bassman combos are sleepers. Folks were saying "nay" when they came out because they weren't "all tube," but I downsized from my Aguilar stack to the TV-Twelve a few months ago as I was trying to turn a music room into a nursery and I have been nothing but impressed with the tone.

That looks like a chill place to record. Lot's of good vibes.

Hmmm. A desk with credentials like that could have some serious potential. But if it needs major work, then it could lose all of that mystique from those legendary studios.

As for the TV 15, what do you think of the tone stack EQ? It baffled me until I did a little more research. The flat settings are a bit counter-intuitive.

Hi Justin

Very nice! It seems a very comfortable place and for sure it´s a good inspiration work in a space like that.
I also work as a producer and one of my projects in a next future is create a place like that in my house for pre productions, composing and record certain parts of the work (like synths, small amps etc…)

Will you use this studio to make your tracks in remote session work? It will be great, sure. The gear is amazing and very well selected.

How about microphones?

In another thread you talk to me about the excellent Aurora Audio GTQ-2 and i can see in the photos some Brent Averill 1073. Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to hear this preamps side by side (i have a 1272 BAE and i heard the Aurora one year ago)
I know that Aurora is not exactly a Neve clone but both (Aurora and BAE) are based on 1073. What differences you see between them? have you some "original" Neve 1073 unit?

You can be proud bro! :smug:

Aurora is more open sounding than the BAE 1073, and I love the 3 band EQ. They are both amazing though, I just find the BAE more vintage, which is great for whatever sources.

TV tone stack is weird, but cool. What's the flat setting again, mids on 10?

I'm not worried too much about vintage credentials with that giant paperweight of a desk in there. What I don't want to do is spend 10-15k on a recap/rewire and still have limited functionality. I'd rather just buy one of those new API's, a Neotek, a Speck, even a Toft, something like that.

Yes, this will likely be where I do the lion's share of remote session work from here on out, though I definitely still have enough gear at home to do it there as well, which will come in handy in case I have something else going on at the main spot.

Best,
JMJ

That's definitely a rough spot to be in with the mixing desk. Sometimes a console like that can attract some clients, but if it's not functional enough to be the workhorse you would need it to be, then where is the real benefit?

Regarding the remote session work, are you tracking live with another studio via broadband/isdn, or recording tracks so that you can FTP them to the artist/producer?
