Studio vs Live - P or J?

i find my P bass works better for live stuff. As much as I like the J sound it gets lost in the mix

But what about in the studio? I am thinking the J is great there, as good as a P.

So the P is better live but in the studio neither has the advantage.

Sounds a bit backwards to the usual advice. Most folks 'round these parts would prefer the P in the studio, maybe prefering the J on stage.

I use whatever fits the vibe of the gig - sometime a P, sometimes a J, sometimes something else. Mot much of a studio guy, mostly live.

I use a Precision in the studio, no hum, classic tone.
I use a Jazz frequently playing live, comfy neck, like the offset body when standing. However, it IS wired in Series, so it's not "normal."

Been there done that. What I have seen is that qhat works live trumps what the song needs.

To me it's 50/50. P is arguably the most recorded bass though..

I feel similarly. My P (SB2) plops itself down and dominates the lows, where my Jazz tries to fight the guitars for the mids in a rock mix. Conversely, the articulate quality of the J really shines for slower stuff or reggae.

The surprise in my new project has been my T bird. Fat lows like a P, but articulate like my Jazz, its a cool blend. Can dub out or go faux upright plucking near the neck, and then grab a pick and grind it out down near the bridge. So yeah, new favorite

I saw the R40 tour and he was lost in the mix. It was mostly deep synth bass with him jangling above it.

Really? I've never heard him lost in the mix. They must've had the synth running to loud with too much low and and low mids. That will drown out any bass.
