Isn't Sting pretty famous for playing old style single coil P basses?

Since the early 90's he's been playing those old P-basses but in the Police days it was often a Jazz.

Studio-whatever works for the song;
Live- whatever works for the song while moving, jumping, hopping and singing.

This is often studio = P bass, Live = J bass. But not always...

Synchronicity was recording with a Spector which he also used live, also fretless on many early tunes like "Every Little Thing"

What most have already covered here...the majority of what you would see Sting using back in those days consisted of Fender P's and J's, Ibanez Musicians, and towards the end ('83) Spectors.

For me, playing live with a P bass means I have to roll off the lows so that my tone doesn't get too muddy or undefined.
Recording - the P is super easy to get a decent tone.

I played an outdoor gig this last weekend with a large PA (line array with ground stacked subs) I brought my new Fender American Professional II fiver and my trusty old Fender Roscoe Beck Jazz V. I ran them through my B6 and into a small EV powered monitor with a 12. WAAY too small a rig for the gig. I started with the P. The backwash from the subs and the drum monitor totally drowned out my tiny rig. Could not hear my rig, just a lot of rumble. Switched over to my Roscoe in humbucker mode and suddenly, everything cleared right up. I could suddenly hear my rig. My B6 was DI'd into the pa, however there was only a HPF and a small amount of compression on the preset. So, from my experience, Jazz for live and P for studio.
