I doubt they move the basses around too much (at the WDR symphony they usually stay in the house). And if they do probably in hard cases.

It's not the same as moving around with the bass rather often from gig to gig.

But I agree, for seams getting open because of humidity it doesn't make much difference for a ply or a carved bass. Would be much worse for the carved basses if it would be extremly dry.

And yet basses are played all around the variety of circumstance and climate. To say not to buy a carved bass because of humidity concerns is not good advice.

Shen carved basses are built just outside of Shanghai -- never humid there (93% today, in case you missed the irony).

I'll just comment that I recently began playing an upright bass and after renting a 3/4 upright for 90 days realized I'm too old to lug the thing around and it barely fit in my car, taking over most of it I found a used Eminence Upright on Ebay with the bolt on neck and absolutely love it! I do use a Zoom B-9 effects processor to broaden the sound. But the feel is exactly like the 3/4 but about half the size and fits nicely in my car. Plus for those international gigs I can take the neck off and put the whole thing in a case the size of a golf bag. I'm very happy with it and it appears to be a quality instrument... of course it should be for what I paid for it. Most expensive bass I've ever bought.
