Stupid question, can I bring a bass with me to army basic training?

Thanks for serving! I had a few musicians in my platoon at basic when I went through Ft. Dix, and a couple of them managed to sneak in/hold onto their mouthpieces to keep their embouchure up, but here's the thing - we were so tired, they really didn't have time for that. Basic is for basic. Good luck!

I remember my first day thinking that some of those folks never saw Tribes, The D.I. etc. But to be fair it was just after Stripes was released and were at Fort Knox were Stripes was filmed.

More than just basic training, you'll have to get through AIT as well before thinking about having your bass with you on base. I had my folks ship my stuff to me once I got to my first duty station after AIT. We had a little barracks band there in Fort Hood in 199x. Likely you'll meet some good guys who also play. It will become one of your best musical memories, trust me.

I dont know about the Army but when I reported to Marine corps. boot camp we were told to not bring a thing you just showed up with the clothes on your back everything you needed was provided for you even a new mom and dad...

Get on here & post so that we know you're O.K. if you go overseas to the Mideast. I was a sailor and thank you for your honor in stepping up to put your self on the line. You may bring stationary,a pencil, and possibly a watch so that when you are molested by the drill instructor, you will be able to write it down and the time it occurred...

When I was in basic training in 1979 I went to Fort McClellan, Alabama for MP school. The recreation hall had an acoustic guitar, electric guitar, amp, bass, bass amp and drums. They weren't great but they were enough for us fellow musicians to jam once in a while. Not sure where you are going and if they will have instruments available. Even if you could take it, I would recommend that you don't. They are not going to secure it for you so why bother. Wait until you get your duty assignment and see if you can have it shipped or buy a very inexpensive bass that you don't care about losing.

It is a very good gig. I know several horn players and singers who were in the army band some are retired and some are actually still actibe. It is GREAT work if you can get it..... and you can get it if you try.........and can sight read.
