Stupid soccer comments...like very stupid

Soccer involves more skills than you can think of. how many ways are there of hitting a baseball? one. how many ways are there of kicking a soccerball for various scenarios? 1000. And thats only one aspect of the game. To disrespect this sport thats been around forever by saying it requires no skill just because u dont like it is ignorant. and ofcourse a third of the players will be scratching their butt as would any sport played by little kids. Thats like saying because the 6 year olds playing baseball arent hitting home runs it requires no skill to play that sport. Id like to see any athletes of any sport play against MLS players, theyd be killed because its a whole other skillset, just like theyd be killed in basketball.

depends on your definition of big; more people under the age of 17 play soccer than other sports (combined...? maybe, i think i read that recently) in the U.S.

currently the U.S. is in contention to host another world cup in 2018. i think if we do end up hosting again it'll really boost soccers popularity even more, and combined with the younger generation of americans who will have grown up playing soccer and i wouldn't be suprised to see soccer overtake hockey as the nations least important major sport.

The only thing that has a chance to stop that is advertising companies and their influence on sports channels. They don`t care for games that have constant action, unlike football and baseball

this is probably the main obstacle in soccers future. sports channels are not going to be receptive to carrying soccer games (except FSC naturally) because of the lack of advertising time in comparison to baseball and football. the players jerseys may have sponsors on them, and the pitch may be surrounded by adverts, but the fact that the only break where you can stuff a snickers commercial is at half time will be a problem.

the low scores are not the problem to me.....it's the lack of variety in skills......hands are not allowed,everyone can run...it's hard to see any shift from defense to offense,as it all appears the same......ice hockey is basically the same game,but you have to develop a few skills before you can play,football and baseball involve a lot of different skills

the reason it is gaining in popularity here seems to be more about the convenience of parents who need not buy any gear,kids who don't really have to develop any skills to play,and immigration from countries where the game is popular.....

check out any kids playing soccer....a third of the players will be scratching their butts

unless you know a little about the game it is difficult to pick out individual skills

Can you juggle a ball for at least 10 hits? How about 5? 3? Do you even know what juggling is in regards to soccer? (honestly).

Can you you shoot a convincing shot from the top of the box? Place it in the top right corner every time? How about 25 yards out? Do you even know what the top of the box is? (honestly).

Do you know the differences involved between a pass and a shot in soccer? Do you know the basic shape your foot is suppose to take for each? How about where you attack the ball and how you attack it? (honestly).

Are you able to run for 45 minutes straight without a break? Are you able to read the opposing team or are you merely going to chase the ball around like an 8 year old the whole time?

You obviously either don`t understand the game or just think the game never evolves past the level you see little kids in rec league play at.

I mean by comparison what`s hard about football? Besides the quarterbacks position one could say everything else is laughable. You have obese men slamming bodies on the line of scrimmage and a few other guys running around in hopes that a ball gets thrown at them so that they can catch it. Seems easy enough to me in comparison to soccer where every player has to have the accuracy of a quarterback with their kicks and more endurance than any wide receiver for over 45 minutes straight of running with no break, time out, or down time for tv commercials. And baseball? Give me a break. Talk about a sport that`s infested with a bunch of no talent juicers who are over payed for what they do. Besides the pitchers, talent is optional at best.

But again, saying something like that would be ignorant and would be coming from someone who doesn`t know what they are talking about. All sports take talent.

My only real issue with soccer/football is the end of the game scenario. In American football and basketball, the game's final seconds are very dramatic on a regular basis--games can be won and lost there, right down to the final whistle/buzzer.

In soccer, the end is (quite frankly) vague because of "injury time"--no one knows exactly how much time is left before the end except the referees, not the players (I think) or the viewers. Then all of a sudden--oh well, it's over. I guess as an American sports fan, I'm used to last-minute drama.

I enjoy soccer when I see it in person. I went to a couple of the Olympic matches in '96 and had fun. On TV, however, I find it pretty dull.

but to answer your question.....i played hockey.....i may not have been a great player, but before i could play at even the most basic level i had to learn how to skate.....football players must learn and execute complex assignments that change every play.....baseball situations change with every pitch......i'm well aware that soccer players at world level must be well conditioned.....some games require endurance,others are more relaxed in pace but require more focus.....

This is probably the most well-put post in this thread.

Soccer, like most things, can be difficult to understand if you aren't aware of some of the deeper strategies and techniques involved. What may seem like a player randomly kicking the ball or running to another part of the field for no reason can actually involve a lot of thought and purpose.

my exact thoughts on baseball. for the longest time i thought it was a boring "sport" where the "players" spent more time standing around scratching their crotch than doing anything else. i went to a couple games, had a good time, but didn't really change my view point. then my roomate took some time to explain the in(ning)s and outs and some of the more subtle tactics used and now i'm proud to say that i quite enjoy baseball.

any sport can seem pointless and stupid at a cursory glance, once you get to know it though everything changes (even cricket?!)

Jim, your whole post reads like an insult to anyone who plays, has played, or even just simply enjoys soccer from an audience perspective. It just sounds ignorant and gives off the attitude that soccer requires no real skill in comparison to sports like baseball, football, or even hockey and that is completely false. The sport involves every part of the human body. Arms and hands are used for throw ins, legs and feet are used for running and kicking, your chest and stomach are used for blocks, and your head is used to play the ball in mid air. It`s not a simple foot game and the skills needed for each part of your body are very intricate for anyone looking to get into even the most basic form of competitive play (much like any other sport). If you don`t prefer soccer to some other sport then that`s perfectly fine - but do not act or say it doesn`t require skill to play in comparison to other sports.
