. I reread your post and you just phrased it wierd and made it seem like you were discrediting the sport when you were just explaining why some people discredit it.

Its all fine, conveying and recieving sarcasm over the internet can be quite difficult, they should make a font for it.
Sorry, but it doesn't matter how much you know about any sport, the answer to "How many quarters are there in a game?" is the same the world over!
I went to the Fox News website KNOWING they'd get some aspect of that wrong and, sure enough, the flag they used for England was the Union Flag (Great Britain / UK) and not the Cross of Saint George. Every other US website got it right, probably despite not seeing our flag very often. I emailed Fox and told them. I did not get a reply.
Football players need to know and learn play situations too, it's not limited to American Football only. And with a constantly changing field you have to have an overview where everybody is. With American Football you go with the play you decide on, with Football you go on reflexes, intuition and situation.
IMHO, there's too little scoring and too much time spent running the length of the field for it ever to be a popular sport in the US. We need constant action to stay amused

Did you see the first half of Mexico - France? That was exactly a constant action game. And did you see Germany - Australia? 4 goals by the Germans, who worked like a well oiled machine. And I think everyone can appreciate that (even if you're Australian

It makes me so angry when my coworkers try to discredit soccer as a sport. These are people who spend their time on american football forums year-round. I think the trend in America is, unless you play or have played, you just don't appreciate it.
I am not trying to be defensive here, just making replies to some interesting points!
The most stop-start sport I've ever watched is AFL/NFL! When the ball is in play it's great for the maybe 20 seconds and then the game stops (most of the time) for 3 mins while there is a TV break. Hardly continuity. Now, edited highlights with all the breaks taken out (like we used to get in the UK) are very entertaining.
I think it really comes down to what you grow up with and if you a teenager today in the US..........
Hands are allows - Goalkeepers and Throw-in's (smart-a I know!)
Those that have played the game will tell you that there is quite a variety of skills between the positions on a football field. These positions can be split into 'Attack', 'Midfield' and 'Defense', in today's game there is a requirement for all players to have a very good grasp of all the skills required for the game.
Someone tell me how a 350lbs offensive linesman has a variety of skills, apart from his size/momentum?

Add in the fact that each player will have to swap from attack to defense at a moments notice, and all tactics, and plays will need on the fly adjustment.
Each player needs not only physical skills, and abilitys in all areas of the field, from striker, to winger, midfielder, defender(and its even helpful for goalkeepers to have all these skills too), but a good grasp of tactics, and to be able to change their style of play without warning from managers, or coaches, on top of very little breaks, compared to a lot of other sports.
there are a lot of things to remember and execute every down,and while the offence must remain motionless once set the defense can change position until the snap.....i see what you're saying,and i agree,but all of the soccer strategy in the world would not be apparent to someone who has no knowledge of the game......i imagine that someone from panama might say the same thing about ice hockey
what i said before people started jumping down my throat was that i don't find the game all that appealing,and i'm not sure when that statement became some kind of anti soccer rant....nor does suggesting possible reasons why north american sport fans might feel the same way,but i guess that's the net.....

...and as an ex-rugby player who also played a bit of soccer - centreback (there's a surprise), the lack of scripted plays or strategy is what give soccer a certain spontaneity, which always makes it interesting!
I've also 'survived' a couple of full-time 0-0 NFL games so I can see why fans of Gridiron are so scared/bemused by any 0-0 scoreline, without extra time, but it's different in soccer IMHO! 0-0 in gridiron is perhaps the worst spectator sport ever invented?
I completely agree. Football (american) is entertaining and I like to watch it but I'm frankly getting sick of all the break and commercials. Obviously not NFL level but I remember a kid who I went to high school that was like the star linebacker. Was it because of his skills? Nope he was damn near 7 foot tall and probably weighed over 250 lbs. Football takes skills but I feel soccer takes more.

No, no and NO! Our local pub tried showing the games but went back to baseball, basketball and auto racing. Same thing here at the house

I was gonna comment on how no one understands sports they didn't grow up with, but it seems that's been covered numerous times and then completely ignored already. Even by the same person.

That would have been a serious answer if i were 5 years old, as when I asked the time my mother responded a quarter after twelve. I thought she meant 12:25.
I played some soccer as a kid as well, for like a summer, and my team got a first place ribbon (thats it, an effing ribbon, my little league team came in last and we all got trophys!).
Id say baseball and high school football are probably played more in the US than soccer, but thats just from my perspective.
One of my favorite places to play is a pub in Marina Del Rey called Brennan's, and on (I think) Thursday nights they have turtle racing, though it doesnt take place on a table top, they have a track on the patio outside for it.
