Sturgill does Nirvana

The man who sold the world was a David Bowie song covered by Nirvana....I thought they did a great job myslef...
I like his music but the dude has a serious case of mumble mouth. It doesn't help when they drown it in reverb. I think I liked his cover of When in Rome's The Promise more.
I actually think I'd like it more if it were conforming more to the modern country flavor e.g. Eric Church, Parmalee, etc.
I like the stripped and mellowed grunge covers by piano girls, but stripped and mellowed by a cerebral hillbilly is something I've tried myself and I think it works about as well as hot dogs in vanilla cake, even when done by someone as skilled as Sturgill. Yet I like Johnny Cash's mellow strip album...

That first assertion almost made me throw up in my mouth.
I didn't like saying it, myself, but when the chorus hits, it really seems poorly served as-is... like he was going for brocountry and then just dead-fished it. I was never a fan of the stuff, but being forced to listen to it all last summer really made this sound like a poorly produced bro ballad.
I think it is excellent.

Me too. I like that Sturgill ISN'T modern country. Him, Cody Jinks, Whitey Morgan and the likes of them are the only dudes keeping real country together these days.

Yes! Him too. Whitey is hands down my favorite right now. His voice just sounds like whiskey and bad decisions to me. Like an outlaw should.
