If you can find a used Washburn XB900 in the MM configuration, it is a great playing and sounding Ray clone.
Music Man Sterlings have a smaller body and a thinner, smaller neck and come in H, HH, & HS pickup configurations.
Nope. Lakland's do sound really good, but not like a EBMM.
I'm pretty sure that Spector is not sub $1,000. At least it is not
sub-$1,000 for a new one. That said, it is one cool bass and I wish I had one.
Of those four, I have tried the Fender and the G&L.
I liked the Fender, but I don't know if it is any smaller than a Sting Ray, definitely not as small as a EBMM Sterling. The neck is nice, and I liked the tone.
G&L is a brand I love, but most at quite heavy (not all), and their necks are not small. But they are certainly great basses.
For under a grand you can get a nice Music Man Sterling (used) - slim neck with a smaller body.
G&L 1500 is a Stingray killer and can be had well under a grand. G&L L2000 can do Stingray as well and you can buy a new tribute model for 5 bills. The necks aren't as nice as on a Ray, but they are not too shabby either.
This was my thought too. Before I bought my Stingray, I got a Spector Euro and I love the feel so I was looking into the rebop mm. Obviously not under $1k and some Spector people told me its not all that close in tone to a Stringray. Dont know that for sure though.
I'd say get a sterling, but you seem kinda set against an EBMM.

+1 for used Sterling. I played one for years. Very versatile bass.
The L-2000 is the only bass I own. It's an incredible instrument and I have never been happier. However, if you're looking for a Ray sound, you might try a SUB or something. I know my L-2000 pretty well, but when I tried the real thing, I was forced to acknowledge that they are just two entirely different beasts.
+1 on the Sterling, seems to hit points you are looking for. Just played one at GC again last weekend, nice bass.
Schecter Diamond P Plus. Check out the video below. It can be played as a P bass or a Stingray and costs about $800 new. Seymour Duncan pickups come stock right out of the box. The only thing I can imagine you not liking about his bass might be the body shape.

Here's your Stingray tone on a budget...even says so in the addy. I own one and concur. Don't know if it's the pre, the pups, whatever, but it nails the vibe and is helluva lot more comfortable than any EBMM product I've hoisted.

EBMM Sabre classic, has a stingray neck and smaller body. Sounds just like a stingray but with a bunch of other options.
