Subcontra Bass Hype or practical

Subcontra Bass hype or practical

I use the term "hear' in the traditional modern harmony sense, developed by musicians in the 50'-70's. It means to have the ability to recognize what you are hearing as far as identifying exact pitch instantly.

So in this context re-read this and other threads where the words practical, muddy, human hearing limitations etc. are used. This entire poll deals with bass players on Talk bass deciding if Subcontra or the 0(zero) octave notes on a bass guitar are practical or not.

Yes, we all can hear something, but is it recognizable as pitch in the tempered scale?

Saying "not practical" means not being able to "hear" it as pitch.

So if you just love to hate me, or Jauqo, how about other players as mentioned earlier by me in this thread who now have C#0 strings.
So ask again: Why would Jean Baudin or Ken Lawrence be putting on a C#0 string on a long awaited bass if no one can "hear" C#0?
If you can hear the pitch, why not use the note?

"Who said no one can hear it?'-Moo
"Well I can't hear them Jauqo tried to play some of his CD for me through some very expensive speakers. I just couldn't hear the low stuff and my hearing tests okay. '
ah,you did Moo,for one!

Post #34 "it is actually very likely that you cannot hear much below 20Hz. But, that doesn't mean you can't discern the pitch of a C0 note on your bass."-Geshel

i don't have time to interpret this "it's actually very likely"? Which is it?

"That even though neither you nor I can probably hear very much below 20Hz, it doesn't in any way invalidate the use of notes that low on musical instruments."-Geshel

Probably ?-get off the fence! If neither you nor I nor Jean, nor Yves, nor Jauqo can "probably" hear very much below 20hz ( and we are only talking 3Hz below) how could we determine the pitch of what we can't hear?

I can't answer that, because I never said nobody could hear the note (meaning either literally or using your definition).

no,for you to say that would require commitment,so you ride the fence, alluding to it,but never saying it. Very Convienient!

probably could not is much safer

almost but maybe can't cannot can, possibly, probably not but possibly yes

To me what speaks a lot more than talking about this stuff is just making some music with it.

I just don't understand anyone being somewhat ridiculed because they just said "I can't hear it."

I thought that I did make some music with it:)and have some more on the way and for the record I could care less about who can and can't hear, because some can, some can't and some never will.I wasen't upset when Moo(Bob)told me he couldn't hear it,I thinks thats a lot better than telling me he could when he really couldn't.and Jared if you're listening to the sound bites from cdbaby remember they are very compressed.

it's on it's way Moo,it's on it's way.

Nah I don't. Not yet. If it works it works. I just want to see if it does! I feel like I haven't been able to listen to it properly I guess. It's an interesting idea and I want to hear more. The experiment idea would be more to satisfy my own curiosity.

If not, just out of curiosity why did you vote Hype?

exactly! I am happy to read a simple "can't hear it." It was all the "flashy hype" and "just to sell cd's" bit that causes the ruckus.
