no,for you to say that would require commitment,so you ride the fence, alluding to it,but never saying it. Very Convienient!

probably could not is much safer

almost but maybe can't cannot can, possibly, probably not but possibly yes

Garry - you've just moved from clueless to abusive.

Not only did I never say it, I never even hinted at it. I tried to make a simple, technical point, that in no way diminished any of the work you've put into the instrument or ever called into question your motives or behavior.

The simple fact is that you didn't understand what I was trying to say, and that is fine. That says as much about me as it does about you.

But where you leave me behind is that now you insist on believing that I have some sort of problem with you, or your bass, or the strings on it, etc. I've said at least four times that I don't. It's all very cool with me.

So, why the personal attacks like your above post? What have I done here that would make you believe I am such a person? You must feel that very strongly to come out in public like that insulting me.

My point, all along, has been this: people do not need to be able to hear the fundamental frequency of the notes that low (whether it's because their ears can't hear that frequency, or because the stereo can't produce it, or whatever) to make using notes that low worthwhile.

In case you still hadn't figured it out, this actually supports your and Jaquo's use of these notes. Yes, not only do I not oppose what you're doing, I encourage it.

geshel,
I don't personally attack anyone and don't believe in the concept of insult.
it accomplishes nothing. If we met,we would probabaly become good friends.

As i posted earlier in this thread ,I prefer it if people say they can't here below 20hz. I like being part of a select few who use a C#0 string.I have been paid from having it to use.

I don't have any problem with you ,but when you make a statement like probably neither you nor I can hear below 20 Hz-what is that?
If i can hear 20Hz,I can hear 19 and 17Hz. How would you have me interpret your statement? I am wrong in thinking you are telling me probably I can't hear much below 20Hz? It's sort of looks like that is what you are implying.
It looks like you are saying I probably can't hear my C#0 17hz string.17 Hz isn't much below 20Hz,so is this a round-about way of saying I can hear 17Hz? This is ambiguous as "6 billion short".Double-speak.

It is confusing at best and I was glad you could see it was derailing that "Beyond six strings" thread.
It's ok to vote "hype" in this poll.I think it is a waste of time(not you personally) to accuse Jauqo of trying to use a poll to draw attention to himself or his cd.

We are on Talk Bass to do just that.I don't need to insult anyone, judge anyone and I don't think I am better, greater or smarter than anyone.I think you would get ticked if you invented certain basses, techniques and strings and someone came on and said that you didn't or tried to make you feel like an idiot because you state your professional credits.I think if you have made a living as a professional bass guitarisr for nearly 40 years and a guy who hasn' done that declares you to be arrogant, you would speak up.
It looked like you were basically saying we( you and I) most likely can't hear below 20Hz so give it up.I am saying, speak for yourself, there are those of us who can.

and this looks like a cheap attempt at an insult:
"Garry - you've just moved from clueless to abusive."
I don't think I am cluesless after making a living as a professional full time live and session bassist for nearly half a century..

No Garry, that's not what I'm saying. And I've said that that is not what I'm saying about a half dozen times.

I will proceed with the assumption that you have not actually understood a single word I have written on this forum. I'm not going to waste any more energy trying to get through. Cheers.

We are not trying to sell you guys Cds here.We sell to the non-musician public.I'd send you my cd or Jauqo would send you a cd for free so you can hear the string, but the postage adds up with 30,000 TB members.

The cool thing is we are on a number of 99 cent per track down load sites
and you can buy one or two tracks to hear without laying out $14.99 for the entire cd. Visit our web sites for the sites like Rhapsody,I-tunes etc.

But you will need to run the mp3 through your bass rig not those computer speakers.

Hey Garry-
I looked for your cd on itunes and I couldn't find it. I see Jauqo's there.

Here is the thing for me. Doesn't it kind of defeat the purpose if you have to run the music through your bass rig? How can you sell music to the non-musician public that needs to be run through a huge bass rig to be properly heard? I will say I definitely don't understand that.

You used to be able to buy vinyl records that were in "mono". if you had just a record player ,like a portable,it was cool. They had one speaker. The stereo records came out and if you bought one and put it on your mono record player, you could still enjoy the music and would never know what you were missing because the song and the performance was good.
People have a home stereo and DVd player and rent a Dvd and it sounds pretty good. Take the same Dvd to another place where they have stereo and a sub woofer, and you now feel the bombs explode. The you take the DvD to another system with 5.1 surroung sound and you can really hear what you were missing. It's like a 3d movie but only some have the 3d glasses.

You can hear octave zero on most systems, even headphones. That octave come alive on a audiophile system. I wish you could have heard those notes at Paramount mastering. Not only could you hear the pitch, but the note shook the walls.I am not going to lie to you about this. You just haven't heard bass until you've experienced this.If you think an 808 kick drum sounds big played on a high end car stereo,it sounds like corn popping by comparison .
I've heard my Cd played on the radio and it sounds like a quality smooth jazz or new age Cd.If I hear it on a system that supports at least 20Hz,it is breathtaking.

You watch a film in a theater with surround sound and it's nice. You feel the helicopter fly by and shake your seat. You rent the same film and watch it at home on and it's not the same, but you watch it and enjoy the film. The helicopter sounds like your electric shaver, but you get through it.
So ,it wouldn't seem practical to have a movie done in 5.1 unless an affordable home system was on it's way. We have been working on making it practical to have those few notes below 20Hz.

Edit: For the record I don't think Jauqo is using Talkbass as a platform to promote himself at all. I think he is just trying to share his ideas with his fellow bass players.

Thanks Jared but
Remember the catching comes before the Hanging but in my case(at least with Jared)I was hung before I was caught:)

Al Caldwell and some non musicians has my CD in their Ipods and they are digging the Lows from it.

Hello gentle people!

highly fascinating these subcontra basses. Should my budget allow I'll defineltely get one myself.

Two questions to the Adler-owners: why was the subcontra constructed with only a 34" scale and not with 35" or 36" (the B-string on a Dingwall is even 37")?

Where do you get the strings from?

cheers

Thanks for your interest.when I first set out to have my Bass made(my Subcontra Bass is a 4 string tuned Low C# to standard E)I knew and felt that with the proper construction(neck and body woods)that my two lowest open notes were obtainable, but pickups and electronics also played a part in this concept as well(I own a 5 string Music man stingray and a Pedulla hexabuzz(6) string)and over the years I have owned and played numerous 5 strings that had what I felt were/is a very pronounced killer B string.I also own a Custom 6 string Dingwall and yes it has a 37" scale B string but for me a 35"scale subcontra is not necessary(the very first Subcontra Bass I had made was a 35" scale and from there I realized that I prefer the 34" scale).now having a 35" scale multi scale Bass wouldn't hurt it at all as some of the Kats that are using multi string Basses will agree(even my Blue 8 string Bass is a 34"scale and I have another 8 string that is shorter than 34" it's about 33"1/4)and my strings are made by SIT.

I can give you my POV.
Throughout history,we've relied on acoutics to create and amplify a note. Pipe organ bass pipes-BIG,Tuba-Big,Double Bass-Big. This has carried over into speakers and amps-BIG.

Adler basses are precision instruments.I tune to a C0.I have a very HI Fi pickup and an on- board preamp that has a frequency output from 2Hz-200Khz. There is no harmonic realignment and zero phase varience. You will hear the string and it sounds great. When you hear the notes played in the 0 and 1st octaves, they are incredibly clean, full bass notes. I feel I don't need 37" to get the sound I want.Because we rely less on acoustic properties, bigger isn't better.Electronic do the work.

Because they are solid body basses with pick ups and parametric eq's, we can dial in the frequencis that make the strings sound great.
In the case of the Adler12-string,I have to have 8 octaves sound as even and consistant as a grand piano and still be able to play comfortably.
37" is great, but by Ab4 string is at 32".I don't care for that wide of a fan.
The sound of my bass played through an appropriate system is pretty hard to beat, even with a 37" scale bass.

exactly! I am happy to read a simple "can't hear it." It was all the "flashy hype" and "just to sell cd's" bit that causes the ruckus.
BS Garry, you've attacked me specifically and I haven't mentioned hype or selling CD's.

I have said I didn't hear it and am anxious to try again and you still have made personal attacks against me. This kind of attack will subconsciously influence peoples impression of your music, in my case it will be consciously.

Its without a doubt not practical but I wouldnt call it hype. Actually I really dont know what hype is... exaggeration maybe? The poll seems a bit useless to me. If its practical its good or acceptable? If its hype then its not good?

Its music.

you asked me who said they couldn't hear it,and I showed you. You wouldn't happen to have a" chip "on your shoulder, would you? What makes you think I attacked you? Looks like that's what you did to me with a sarcastic question.

People all over the world buy my cd and enjoy it. Talk Bass is the only forum where people react like children. From my very first post here I was lambasted with crap simply for stating facts.Geshel was there to chime in.

I don't care if you,or geshel want to try to turn me into a villain.I have no desire to attack you nor anyone here. Jauqo and I don't criticize or think less of anyone who disagrees with us.
Just don't tell us that WE can't here something because the "experts" say we can't,or you can't .That's the only issue here.

;) Ya gotta stop making attacks in the same posts claiming your innocence. Even us lambasting children can see through it.

Mmmm, lamb......

I think choice of adjectives was the main reason for the conflict in this thread. Useful and not useful would have worked much better. That would make responses personalized to the poster and not bring the Spanish Inquisition down on any who do not feel this instrument is "impractical" at this time.

Can someone please lock this thread please. It's like an addiction for me. I know the whole speel and yet I can't look away.

"This bass is not practical for me."
"Until you have worked at Jingle Corp for nigh on a half of a century your input cannot be taken seriously."

"This idea is a good one."
"You are a genius for thinking so. You need no "professional history" to back up your statement as it agrees with mine, therefore your reasoning it must be sound."

This has to end.
