Submixer question...

Hey guys,

Our band is making the jump to a snake finally :hyper:... I want to save some board space and make use of an old mixer thats just sitting. We're looking at running 5 drum mics into the submixer back to the board. So my question is after I run stereo out of the "submixer" back to my main mixer do I have to pan on the mixing board respectively... Basically would I pan left stereo to the left and right stereo to the right or just leave it as is?

If you want stereo, you‘ll have to have left and right panned on both mixers. But why would you run stereo out of the submixer? That’s just going to needlessly burn a second channel of the main console. One main out of the submixer to a single channel of the main mixer is all you need.

If you are moving up to a snake, then I presume you have some one doing sound for you? If so, I think it would be better to put both of the consoles in the same place. At FOH.
As to your question about panning, yes, if you want to hear the stereo field, you will need to pan the "return" channels from the sub mixer. If you are not panning anything on the sub mixer then no, you don't need to. The only audience members that will benefit from a stereo image, are the ones in the middle. This of course will open a whole other can of worms, so, YMMV.

Thanks guys,

I didnt realize how ignorant of a question I posted until i re-read it...my apologies.

I actually got some clarification from the sound guy at church as to what I want to do. Basically Im going to be creating "subgroups" using my extra mixer. I'll be running toms into it and panning left and using the left output into a single channel in my main mixer . I'll do the same with the overheads only panning all the way right and using the right out., Ill be saving 2 channels this way. Ive got enough board space to run the kick and snare separate.

I didnt want to lose control of the drum mix or have to have the drummer tweak things so I will have both boards next to each other.

So...does this work?

Yes you'll have to hard pan in order to obtain that. It will work.

If you have subgroups in that old board , just assign the two overheads to sub 1 and the toms to sub 2 and take the sub out to the main board.

Ah, okay then. Well, you can certainly accomplish what you want by panning L/R like you mentioned in your opening post, and using the main L/R outputs. However, I think a better solution would do as fokof suggested, and send the toms to one subgroup and the overheads to another, and use the subgroup outputs instead. That way you can turn the toms up or down as a group, for instance, instead of having to adjust each channel with a tom mic.

Im actually going to be the sound guy.I will have both boards out front with me. 4 mics (2 toms, 2 overheards) will be sent to a submixer (our old board) then sent out to 2 channels in the new board. Yes there is individual control over the L and R.. ..I think Im all set outside of a few cables to make the transitions happen.

Thanks for the great input...glad Im only half crazy :D
