Got to jam out on this before it goes
off to a local theatre. Sounded so good with a 5 string jazz I pulled from backline. Chain was Fender Jazz to Countrymn DI, a new Midas Pro X to 2 Lab.Gruppens pushing 7 Adamson s10s and 2 of their s119s. Bonus pic of Mike Gordons tour prep from when he was here a couple weeks ago. You can see his rig in the back center of the pic.

That's very similar to the rig I have (RCF, not Adamson), had 32 tops and 12 subs, but slowly selling off blocks as I slow things down. I bet it sounds good ;)

Everything at this level sounds pretty darn good. I've used the Adamsons and liked them as well, same for the Martins, Vertec's etc. I use the JBL SRX-718 subs with the HDL-20's and it's a potent system. Easily 6dB more usable SPL in a package 1/2 the size and weight of my previous PA's. Like bringing a bomb to a gunfight ;)

A bomb for sure. I returned from lunch and could hear it through the building and across the parking lot and knew that I had to get in there and plug in. We run the T21s and E219s usually but these were for a 800 seat theatre so it was the first time we got our hands on the S119s and they were definitely putting them to the test.

That was a great excercise with 6 boxes of EAW KF760s and 4 SB1000s. Had cattle and horses scattering. The Boss heard us 1/4 mile away at the office. Signal chain was Stingray SR5 -> Radial J48 -> Yamaha CL5 -> EAW UX processors -> Lab Gruppen FP6400s on tops, Crest 9200s on subs. Actually, the initial tone with console EQ set flat was kinda bright (as in the typical 9db boost at anywhere from 8K to 12K (!!) and nearly a half-ocvtave wide that was seen often in early line array processor setting). A little EQ-ing fixed that.

By the time the bass was cranked up to a nice tone, it was painful to stand near.

This was a little over a year ago. This shop now has an EV XLC rig, so we'll play with that after the 1st. I'll play my Elite Jazz through it this time.

I know, I know, "pics or it didn't happen", fair enough. I'll get pics on this next go-around.

All of the above, plus the increasing cost of transportation, decreasing cost and weight of power amps ($/watt), Neodymium, composites, desire for more effective rigging... and the willingness for a more open mind.

Another potent, hard hitting system!

Speaking of scattering horses and cattle, I have to train my performance horses to handle a PA, the typical system would be 4 or 5 UPA-12's in a smaller arena, and we would typically fly 8 or 10 HDL-20's for a larger arena. Since we are doing "equine entertainment theatre", the horses have to be able to deal with it. In this respect, my horses prefer the line arrays over point sources as the array shading provides a more even bleed into the arena. Of course it's helpful to have a PA or 10 available for training purposes, as we perform to music and announcing/narration.

Cool, so you provided for equine, maybe even rodeo events? I wasn't a country boy, but I grew to really enjoy the rodeo events we provided for over the years. There's a big national event here every year and that was one of the few gigs I would still do after I retired. However, a week after the last one, I came down with a "touch" of pneumonia, no hospital, but 2 weeks of rest and light-duties (got some good practicing in then!), so I'm a little nervous about doing the next one. We worked diligently to keep most of the noise off of the arena floors and the cowboys were appreciative.

There's a friendly competitor in town with the RCFs, they sound great. The 760s are old and heavy, but they still hit hard and in-yer-face. I'm kinda over EAW these days, some really goofy dealer practices. Former/part-time boss is mulling D&B Js after he gets over this latest lighting purchase.

I'm looking forward to playing with the XLCs and my new bass. Really under-rated box. Not earth-shattering, more like a good bang for the buck. There's 16 XLCs down the road belonging to a good friend with more money than sense (and I've told him that exact thing), but he still has fun with it, just needs some help with it. We/they rent it a good bit lately.

Sometimes, I think I could get back in the PA business (as a tech or shop manager, NOT an owner!).

But, nahhhh.....:D

Gosh, seven modules ground-stacked! That's brave, but it looks good. I've seen 6 EV XLCs stacked with considerable effort. Sounded good, though.

The XLC's are a good box too. After almost 40 years in the touring type audio trenches, I'm winding down the production side of things but still do 2 large multi-day agricultural based events, each with between 8 and 10 systems.

I sure got to hear a lot of really good bass players and rigs over the years.
