Suicide and those quietly considering it

Find a different mental health professional. There are different approaches to these situations.

I've been to three different Psychologists and two different Psychiatrists. My frustration with the "system" doesn't come from a single frivilous attempt. I've made a very concerted effort over a long period of time. It simply has no effect on me.

You say that we speak as outsiders, but what you dont know is that some of us have been there before.
When a friend comes to me and tells me theyre contemplating suicide youre not going to hear me say "Go ahead bro, living is your choice, end it if you want"

You have a very valid point. If someone asks for help, than by all means do everything in your power. My point was regarding the people who do it without any prior indication or disclosure of there plans. These people have made there decision for one reason or another and weren't seeking help from others.

There's always a lead-up, it's whether or not people are listening.

On the other hand some friends that I know simply threaten it for the thrill of attention.

I seem to have stumbled upon this thread randomly whilst surfing tonight, but I feel I should tell my opinions on suicide based on my life experiences...

I myself have thought of suicide in the past when I was going through a rough time and was in a very dark place. It was during my last two years of high-school where I was being made fun of by supposed longtime friends of mine, unrequited love (with infatuations and obsessive urges that went on for almost six years afterwards), and other such things. Being scared of the future was part of it too.

My loneliness-turned-depression got to a point where I was tearing up during classes and otherwise being very withdrawn from my friends at the time, which was out of character for me even though I was shy and anxious socially at times.

It culminated when my own mother asked me if I had thought of suicide, and I genuinely answered: "yes."

Lets just say that the stress got to me. I really do empathize with people who have thought about and fantasized about suicidal acts.

My love for my mother, heavy-metal, computer programming, and the gift of playing music is what keeps me going, even when the light goes out.

A couple months ago my wife's cousin Jeff committed suicide. Single gunshot wound to the head, his body was found by a hiker in the wooded area that he ended his life. He was 21 years old. Jeff had a lot of turmoil in his life. He had been hospitalized 6 years earlier for failed suicide attempt. Jeff had lived his (short) life with a lot of pain. He grew up in a wealthy community, with good, loving parents, a good education, he was very good looking, bright, and had an eye for photography. To the average person he would have appeared to have the world by the b*llz, But Jeff also lived with Asperger's Syndrome and possibly some form of bipolar disorder. He was prone to long stretches of depression, some violent behavior, (at times extreme) social and situational anxiety, and obsessive/compulsive tendencies. He had been under the care of various mental health and medical professionals since he was young.

This was difficult to bear and amplified by recent events in my own family;

My son Danny was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome a few years ago. He's now 11 years old. Like Jeff, he displays some of the same characteristics, but to a lesser degree. In November he was hospitalized after a suicide attempt. We knew he was struggling, but didn't imagine he would try to take his own life. One Saturday he had been in an argument with my wife. He was sent to his room. While there he attempted to hang himself. My wife caught him and was able to get him down before he really injured himself seriously. He confessed to us that he had been planning to kill himself since August. He was placed in a treatment hospital for 9 days.

What is the most scary is that we can work with Danny and care for him while he is a child, but once he becomes an adult he will be outside of our care and will be on his own.

He has been under the care of medical and mental health professionals since his diagnosis three years ago. He has also been medicated for the last two years. The event in November caused the doctors to review his medications and make changes, and so far everything is going well, but there is a lot of uncertainty about what the future will bring, and we just take it a day at a time.
