Summer Build Off 2022 - Fun Time Free For All

Re: following all those build threads

This past Winter Build Off, I subscribed to about half the build threads, and found that the sheer number of notifications drove me nuts. And I still missed out on some interesting builds.

So this time, I'm trying a different approach. This time I haven't subscribed to any of the build threads. Whenever I have time, I go to the Luthier's Corner main page, and look in the threads list for thread titles that have "SBO" in them. If that title is printed in bold, it contains posts I haven't seen. So I go there, read up, and return to the Luthier's Corner main page. And so on.

As I said, I only do this when I have the time for it. This may be every day, or twice a week, depending on what else is happening in my life. It works wonders! No notifications = no stress, I only invest time I have available, and I find that I easily keep up with everything Build Off.

Try it!

How did they drive you nuts? It's just a little red number on the alerts button at the top right corner of talkbass.com. Then you click it and you see a list of all the stuff you want to see.

Or did you select emails for the alerts? Yeah, definitely don't do that! :wideyed:

It's worth getting familiar with the "Watch Thread/Unwatch Thread" toggle at the upper-right corner of the screen. I'm pretty quick to unwatch threads when they begin to go in directions that no longer interest me.

As I said, the time factor comes into play. When I have limited time I don't want to look at all the alerts, because I won't be able to read all the threads. But there may still be something I want to look at immediately.
I find the alerts a handy feature, but not the large numbers of them you can get from subscribing to dozens of build threads.
And no, I don't receive email alerts. I switched those off after being on TB for a week.

I can relate! In fact I do this with most things on TalkBass.
But for a situation with a large number of threads, like a Build Off, I just find it more practical to work via the threads list.

I have an unfinished build from last year's winter build off that I'd like to enter. Some of the wood, specifically the neck blank, was glued up prior to the start date though so I guess this may not qualify?

could I possibly enter it in the Partial Build category? None of the parts are manufactured pieces though, I plan on making everything including the hardware.

Here's the thread link:

Sounds perfectly legit as a partial build to me.

Yep that'd be a partial! Start a new thread and link it back here and we're off to the races. :woot:
