I didnt even see the comments to use a router to get the thickness I need. I had some chip out issues with this wood in the past, I'll stick to the sander for now.

I need to redo my router planer to do the body thickness when I get it all glued up. It's not as level and sturdy as it should be.

On today's episode of 'Low-Tech Luthier', we build a drum sander out of common items found in your garage and yard waste!

Gather your scrap wood and Blammo brand log. This log is walnut (probably butternut) and the white thing is a UHMW cutting board we didnt like. View attachment 4739856

Axle is a drill bit extension, made 'bearing' blocks from the cutting board. View attachment 4739858

Router and a spoilboard bit cut the log as the drill made it rotate. The drill doesnt have a trigger lock, so I had to use a clamp to keep it on. View attachment 4739859 View attachment 4739860

And wrapped in 150 grit. It's all I had. I need to use some sort of adhesive because it bunched up on my test piece. The thickness control needs a few tweaks (as in completely rebuilt) but overall it works pretty well. View attachment 4739862

I dunno, I wouldn't exactly call that low tech.
Personally, I like to refer to a lot of the "use what ya got" engineering that I typically come up with as, "redneck rocket science".
Well, I aspire to it. Not sure most of what I do would qualify for the rocket science part.

Around here we refer to it as "Farm Boy Engineering".

Basically nail/glue/bolt/weld a bunch of stuff together and hope for the best. If it doesn't hold, then add more material/nails/glue/bolts/welds until it does what you want it to do.
