Sunn Obsession

I'm thinkin' the ultimate Sunn set up would be a Coliseum 300 with the original 1200s head. Using the bi-amp mode of the 300, have the ss Coliseum drivng the low end. Have the tube 1200s as the external amp running the highs. Possible?

In the 70's our lead guitarist played thru a model T which back then was touted as a lead guitar amp. Silly loud!

I haven't heard the Fender reissue Model T or 1200s

My amp tech sez what gave Sunn their sound and power was the circutry which was really simple.

A good way to find old Sunn gear is to check the pawn shops in the NW. You can dicker with the owners and get a good price because these amps have been taking up space in the shops for so long the owners are very motivared to sell. Did someone say ROAD TRIP?

Hey protoz

Would it be possible to use your Sorado head as an external amp to power a couple of 10s or 12s? I'd be really curious to hear a report on how a fully biamped Sunn system would sound.

I thought the old 1200s was 120w.

I think a Sunn tube high with ss lo would be as close to heaven as us mortals could get!

PS> Haha! Let's hijack Till's thread! T'would serve the bugger right!

For what it's worth, there was a Sunn Coliseum 880 for sale in Chicago a while back (month or two) on craigslist. The seller had pics, including a standard vented 1x18 cab (one of the several original cab models designed to be mated to the original wide box Coliseum amp models), and this thing looked like it had never left the house since 1972!

I bought a Sunn Concert Bass head when they came out to replace a Bassman 100 that wasn't quite loud enough. It was louder and I did like the sound better at gig volumes,I was playing through a Sunn 200s cabinet with JBL D140s.I used that head till I bought a SVT and switched to Cerwin Vega 18s for more bottom and volume. The Sunn Coliseum 18 cabinets back then used Cerwin Vegas also.I prefered the Concert Bass tone to the Coliseums, the Concerts EQ was simpler and it was easier to get a great sound. The coliseums tone seemed too dry for me ,the concert was fuller.A Concert head would be loud enough I think for you Matt but the tube heads are what you really want. The concert has a great clean tone but it doesn't do the grind very well.I used a Vintage Model T head at a gig a few years ago and I think thats what you really need.I used it with a pair of Peavey 210 TX cabinets outside at a block party and it was plenty loud and had a nice grind.

I have used biamp setups in the past using my Sceptre for mids & highs, and cleaner amps for the lows, and it is quite fun. I have a 200s right now waiting for a cab from a certain forumite who's selling it to me, but he's too far to drive, but not far enough to ship it. :help:

Hey Ox

I used to biamp thru a Peavy Mark III using a Sunn Concert Slave as the external to run the lows. Sounded GREAT! I used it as a defensive weapon against a lead guitarist with a full Marshall stack. I only had my rig to 3 and the contest was over! You shoulda heard him bitch! Ah - to be young again!

I was just wondering if anyone had used a full Sunn biamp in the manner described with tube top/ ss bottom - all Sunn. I mean besides JE!

I have a Sunn Coliseum cab 118 + 112 with a passive crossover option built into it. Makes any amp sound good!
