with the bass that inspired it

Its looking really nice. Actually what I really like about it is the continuity between different bits, the pick guard matching the silver hardware, the neck marker matching the pickups, mostly I love how well that ash tray fits in with the shape of the bass. Totally needed the ash tray.

The only criticism I have is the headstock decal. It still doesn't feel right to me. Maybe it needed to be in black. Maybe, it just didn't need one at all.

Thanks! It's stick-on (craft) lettering. It looks better at certain angles where you can't see the clear backing. It's definitely not ideal, and eventually I'll have something made or just as you say, leave it blank. I have the same style in black, but I'm leaving it for now as I likes the chrome theme.

Yeah, like we said earlier in the thread, just no easy way to get really nice results for DIY, except maybe when people take the time to do nice inlays of mother of pearl etc.

I would go for some sort of raised (chrome) lettering like the old VOX logo on the late 60's big paddle headstocks that were made in Italy. Like on a car.

Just rehearsed my Bond Girl set list for tonights rehearsal on the Supernova. Calling it a "Beautiful Beast" would be an understatement. It's beautiful, light, balances like crazy, is smooth as silk in all ways and has absolutely killer tone/presence. Just for the hell of it, I think I'll bring it tonight… with songs like "The Man with the Golden Gun", "Goldfinger", and "Goldeneye"… it should have no trouble fitting right in!

It's funny because I originally considered dropping a JZ3 pre in my '66 trib (that I use for BG) but got all retro and stayed with a period-correct passive set-up. It's awesome in its own right for sure but the Audere just kicks so hard! I have one installed in my Fiesta red J - same deal - when it's in the house, everyone knows/hears it. Like, its big w/o being too loud and is really present. My '64 T-bird is like that (passive of course) - the Seth Lover buckers are the key there.

Well, didn't take it tonight and glad I didn't. I realized it would deter from the intent. My Oly wht/tort/RW '66 trib J is James Bond and I'm focused on creating my sound, my identity in the band and it is my tool of expression perfectly tailored to my very structured input. The Supernova is a bit of a brash hot-rod, a super-charged turbo-thrusted rocket ship! As far as "image" goes, possibly in a surf band setting it could work. (Silver Surfer?) James Bond is classic, timeless… like an Oly white '66 J.

but… outside of Hollywood - the mighty Supernova will be debuted on Wednesday night. I'll try and get someone to shoot some iPhone vids/pics.

Just catching up with your progress here. I really like the evolution of the headstock lettering and finish. What you've got is really nice, and while I was kind of into that vintage auto emblem style you were working on a few pages ago, the one you have now is awesome. The chrome finish is super-sweet, too.

The SuperB is also coming along really well and is a nice theme tie-in to the original Supernova.

The improv gig went well, but my Ashdown amp must have blew a fuse. (will examine tomorrow) We played one long set w/o issue and the beginning of set two it just stopped. I live a couple blocks from the Tavern so Beth fetched my SWR head and meanwhile I played only through the house speakers. (not bad really) This is pertinent because that's when the Supernova was introduced. (trial by fire?) It's funny because in some ways this bass has been plagued by set-backs/hick-ups from the start and yet, it has a strong will to testify and will not be denied. It shared the evening with my '66 P which continues to confirm it's magic when playing it - so up against a pretty formidable trade-off partner. (tag - you're it!) Not the ideal situation, but it sounded huge regardless. Someone said "what's that Kiss bass? ~!~ must be the mirrored pg…

Been away working too many damn hours and I come back to this.

Simply, wow.

Loved the original version, like this even more. The gold/chrome contrast is pleasantly striking, and I even like the logo, although I could see possible changes (more along the lines of a slightly raised surface, like 60s instruments or even the Fender metallic HS decal.)

Agreed that the ashtray really needs to be there. The play of its shape combined with the body/pickguard/pickup shapes is sublime. Total home run.

The 5er looks to be another possible success. Looking forward to that one for sure. (again, the pickguard against the Delano shape against the control plate against the body- supersweet!

If I'm ever Bay-area bound, I'll definitely take you up on your previous invite. :D

More incredible work. I'm not sure if it has been mentioned yet but the Supernova looks almost just like the Pacman character to me. The color is close and the pickups look just like his eyes. The horns are wide and open like an open mouth and especially with the top overhanging horn it looks like the bass could be eating pellets.

You have some incredible talent JIO.

Thanks tbl - you can be assured it hasn't been mentioned yet! :D

removed the stick-on silver lettering and hand painted 'upernova' myself - not perfect but it works for my prototype and gives me the look/identity I had in mind. The silver font was chirpy and horsy aside from it showing clear plastic edges around each letter.
