Supernova Bass project : Ovular content

Just ordered the Delano Xtender ovular :smug: pu set from Max at bestbassgear. A tip for other builders out there, they offer a discount of 10% registering as a builder. It's basic but it helps especially w/a pricy product like this. I got the dual-coil version. Getting my ducks in a row...

Really sharp build and style you've got going. The theme with the curves is harmonious.
That's also a nice idea with the jack on the back, to un-clutter the top, but I'd sure hope the plug pops out (first on an accidental pull) before the magnet-held cover comes off.
Can't wait to see the results of making sawdust...

Thanks JustForSport - I'm counting on some of those small crazy-strong magnets, and a nice stable piece of plexi to keep things solid at the jack. Also, like everyone else I'll have the cord threaded around the strap button when I play it so I think it will be fine.

And HEADLE, as far as the pickguard located V knob - sorry to drive you crazy ;) but I can only say it works for me in a few important ways so... And yes, I'm looking forward to hearing these cool looking pu's also!

Great news - got a call from Dan and the neck w/be done in few days! (he's going to spoil me doing this!) so that means as soon as I get it I can start working on the body. :hyper:

It turns out it will actually be a 3-piece maple neck; the neck, the set-back headstock graft and a board. (no skunk-stripe as I earlier miswrote) The one piece maple neck w/stripe was done by Fender as a production shortcut with the exception being the first year Tele bass that had a maple neck/maple board.

Ya' learn something every day (hopefully!) :)

Got the oval pu's and a few other parts over the last few days. The neck should be done by weeks end. So... these pu's are BIG ...and a bit heavy. And how will they sound?
Like twin turbo thrusters! :bassist::bassist: The V knob is centered between the pu's.

Then I thought, what if only one ala' MM Stingray, so I placed it in the classic P-bass sweet-spot. The V knob would be directly centered on the same line as the pu center.
Either set-up would be cool. I'll wait for the neck so I can see it positioned before choosing one over the other.

Here's a preliminary draft of the back control-cavity cover. I traced the pu to echo the oval-theme. I'll have to research small powerful magnets and do some tests for strength holding the cover securely when jacked into. I positioned a finger hole to pull the cover off.

I used an Xtender on a 5 string I finished a while ago. Its mounted in roughly the same location as a Stingray and is paired with a Duncan Blackout two band preamp. It sounds like a very fat Stingray, those are really nice pickups, you are going to be very pleased with that choice.

I think the 2 pup option fits better with the shape of the pickguard.

That was my original plan but one looks very clean and considering what Hopkins said it would be plenty fat. The pair coupled w/the Audere pre (also huge/fat) would get it to Mars and back! This could be the bass that was used by the loudest rock band in the universe, who played on their own astroid? (I'll have to revisit that part) and still were ear-splittingly loud. :D (Hitchhikers Guide To The Universe)

Hello sir, your design is totally cool and refreshing, I usually go for hollowbody basses myself, but man, this design is awesome. It looks like it is ready to take off at high speeds, which made me think of the concept of Italian Futurism from the early 20th century.

The Italian Futurists saw themselves as soldiers of speed and mechanics, fighting in the name of progress.

First pic reminds me of your design speeding along...

The other random pic, is some guys setting up a "Wall of sound" pre-Greatful Dead.

It seems to me that tilting the pickups for their main axis to be parallel with the pickguard line between them would benefit the look. That line is more or less parallel with the lower horn/neck joint line, it would all just click visually for me. It would not benefit the sound though

IMO, the "ovular" PUs diminish the original design.
It still looks ok, and I would still like to try it out, but the look/design contrast is better w/ trad JB PUs, again, IMO. The sound might make up for it, though...
Watching still, come what may.

As an visual artist I am very aware of the movement and with your reflection have to say I do feel akin to their philosophy/manifesto. Thank you for inviting the comparison, it's nice to know other players out there get the art-reference part. (as in, not directly- but as backstory reference) It's woven into my fabric and my life is a balance of both - it's why I love the object and feel strongly about design as much as I love playing/sonic exploration/music making.
