Supernova Bass project : Ovular content

Cool design, looks like an awesome project.

p.s. You stole my first bass build name :hiding:

p.p.s it's still not done cause i'm lacking money for the moment & mine is different :D

Thanks Andii - Supernova was one of my choices when I was considering a name for my Supersonic bass. Funny because unbeknownst to me Fender already had a Super Sonic guitar. So go ahead and name your build Super Nova! ;) ... and be sure and post a build thread here so we can all check it out! :bassist:

So check this out. One reason a parts-bin is a good resource for builds... had this (early 50's P-bass) bridge cover and it actually looks perfect for the overall shape I've created. I dig the exposed bridge look also, so it's a win-win as you can present it both ways. (and it doesn't hinder player access - my main point of not having covers)

Love the look of the bridge cover.

It didn't load for me at first either, then I refreshed the page, let it go for a bit and it showed up.

Yes, it's somewhat troubling. I'm experiencing a staggered result also. It actually pisses me off for 2 reasons - doing this on a new Mac, and imgbox having just gone through some sort up "upgrade". Clearly both should be giving me no problems whatsoever. My issue w/the dubious marketing concept; new=better. Hang in there - it does work in the end ~

Of all the macs and apple products I've tried. Always dissapointed me.
It's just brand hype.

Well, as of right now, I'm not even sure where the problem is stemming from. I'm guessing it's a imgbox issue as thy f'd around with their system recently. Never had this problem w/their old system and my old Mac. It's to the point where as you can see on page 1, it allows one image out of 4 others that won't appear correctly, all posted at the same time etc. ??? I used to use photobucket and may need to try them again.

Now everything is working fine. (downloading pics) I'm certain it's an imgbox issue. I used to use photobucket before they upgraded their system (thus making my access to it on my old computer null) and switched to imgbox. Now they are having upgrading pains, so I may need to swutch back to photobucket now that my computer is up to date. I downloaded pics via photobucket a minute ago and no problems. Ain't technology grand?

To test photobucket (again), here's a SX-70 polaroid (!) of me having a NBD in 1978. so young...

Finally got it to load. Looks awesome.

I wish there was more of an angle to the lower horn. To make it resemble the original lower horn of a jazz a little bit more. Just a thought.

thanks Splods, but although based on a (already modified) "trad" Jazz, this isn't a Jazz... ;)

I know it's splitting hairs sometimes, but I had a mini-rant on another thread related to Fender and it's marketing decisions over the years. I could go on but for me, basses like my Supersonic and now this one are me imagining a modern Fender bass. Not rehashing retro as Fender has been doing for decades, but evolving the concept into something new with their rich history as a reference. So for me, the Supernova is riffing off of the American Standard (boner) which was riffing off the original Jazz bass. A-B-C. See? :ninja:

Put a deposit on the neck today. I went w/a 22 fret maple J with Gibson-style setback headstock design like my Supersonic. No dots on the fingerboard, black side dots. Like my SS, it will have a butt-end rotary truss-adjuster. I had Dan measure my 'boner' J neck depth/width etc and it will follow suit. ETD: by the end of the month. Yay! :hyper:

I will do the hs face scalloping myself and chose a J profile over a P because I don't own a maple J-necked bass. (only rw & ebony) As much as I'm playing J's more exclusively nowadays, I like playing P's also, but I have a pair of maple-necked P's (fretted and fretless) so time for something new.

I've decided to wait until I get the neck before I cut/route the body. After doing a few builds now I feel doing the routing on a big flat slab of wood will be easiest/best/most accurate. Then cutting and shaping, sanding & sealing, and off to Pat Wilkins for finishing. It's a process and each part takes time. At least until I break ground on my state of the art facilities... ;)

Here's what the back will look like. Not finally resolved on the cover, but something more or less like this - a shape following the oval pu curves and be attached w/magnets. The strat-jack cup will be mounted on that cover and the cover will be painted the same as the body, to blend in visually. It will have a 6 bolts for the neck and the upper strap-peg will be on the back like my Supersonic.

Dealing with the word "oval" reminds me of the early '60's Orson Wells film "The Trial" (Kafka) when in the dialogue of the first scene, the interrogators who burst into Anthony Perkins (pre Psycho) room bastardize the word "ovular" (at 11:00 and later mentioned at 16:36) Ovular is not a word and Anthony Perkins corrects them on it. Like "W" saying "nucular". :smug:

Invalid Link Removed a great film if you've never seen it.
