Supernova Bass project : Ovular content

The outlandish looking pups totally fit the bass. Now I'm really pumped up to see this body get cut and shaped!

So it is a spaceship!:smug:

"...there goes a Supernova - what a pushover"

actually, it's from this song vvv ... ^^^ that sound from a P-bass?!? Wow - just wow.

man does this stuff ROCK! (love at 7:00 in)

It seems to me that tilting the pickups for their main axis to be parallel with the pickguard line between them would benefit the look. That line is more or less parallel with the lower horn/neck joint line, it would all just click visually for me. It would not benefit the sound though

definitely a consideration - will run it by the boys in R&D :D

IMO, the "ovular" PUs diminish the original design.
It still looks ok, and I would still like to try it out, but the look/design contrast is better w/ trad JB PUs, again, IMO. The sound might make up for it, though...
Watching still, come what may.

trust me on this one wraub - ;) this bass will kill

A bit of a stall on the project, Dan has been experiencing some health problems and I've gotten slammed w/work. Such is life. Should pick up again soon...

In the meantime.., I was thinking if I don't do a rear plate-mounted jack, it will be positioned exactly where a P jack would be. As far as a strap-wrap/90 degree input - it's the ideal location.

Hell, it'll kill with looks alone!

The ovular PUs are growing on me...

p.s. Loving that 66!

thanks! It's all how they integrate.

me too! As it's my first real P-bass, I am refreshed to first-hand see Leo's well thought-out bass design for real-world working musicians. Good design never goes out of style!

In an attempt to conger the voodoo needed to reignite this build, I am posting this with hopes my neck will be done (soon?) Dan (as prior noted) had some medical issues but is back in action and hopefully finishing up the neck as I type. (is there a overly cute icon for "hope" in the many new tb choices?) Once I get said neck it will rocket off the launchpad once again so please take your seat, fasten your seat-belts and return your tray table to its full upright and locked position.

Oh, and would someone be kind enough to "like" me - I will return the favor (it's apparently the new way…)

Sounds like next week is when the neck will be done. (just glad he's better) Works out with my current schedule so hopefully by next weekend I'll start routing/shaping the body and getting this project back on the runway. As of today, if I use the Audere preamp as originally planned, it will be a dual pu set-up and if so it will sound massive. If I decide to only do 1 pu, I will need to rethink the pre. Maybe a John East MM Stingray set-up … thoughts?

Here's a preliminary sketch for the B option (which I am choosing) I modeled it after the narrower hs shape that Fender used on many of the 90's 22 fret neck basses including the Plus/Deluxe series. The smaller sculpted heads on the mini-tuners are more in scale w/this smaller hs shape. Please ignore the "angled nut" - just a late night mis-draw. :meh: As on my Suoersonic, the hs face will be painted the Sahara Taupe and the scallop will stay natural.

I think the exact opposite would look exceptional. Paint just the scallop to match the body.

I'd go for two pickups. Make it sound huge, make it a tone monster.

So here's a rough sketch of what I'm currently thinking… the scallop on the body will remain (clear-coated) alder and the scallop on the hs face will take on the Sahara Beige/Taupe. As the Delano's are so visually pronounced, I think fb markers may need to enter in to help spread the black oval motif out a bit. I have a couple of ideas but it will be easier w/the neck in my hands. This one is edge-to-edge ovals, like a block but thinner and wider. More on the way in the next week...
