Saw this fine late 90's 22 fret J on another thread - this is pretty much my inspiration for the 'look' I am shooting for w/different body colour of course but this one (Shoreline Gold? Inca Silver?) has a similar value/vibe. A very classy J in my book.

Here's the water buffalo tusk nut cut and shaped. I may do a brass/tusk sandwich like on my SS but I'll need to get in the shop to do that. (note crudely cut electrical tape oval)

I love the thick nut, and the decal. You really got work done on the headstock bevel too, looks great.

I'd say keep all black paint and pickguard off the body. There is already enough black going on with the rest of the bass.
Let the black on this bass pop, if you paint other parts of the bass black (aside from the ovals going on) it will detract from said ovals.

Trying black (& tuxedo) was mostly for comparison/visualization - after seeing that Shoreline Gold American Standard J, it reminded me of my initial intent. Sahara Taupe/Beige w/a cream pearl pg is back on the front burner.

I like it, a different design, but not too different.

Nice work shaping the headstock a little, great idea to tie it into the rest of the design.

Thanks man - That's nailing it solid on the head and exactly what I aim for! It's all about what I love about classic (Fender especially) guitar/bass design - with my own spin. This one takes what I love about my '93 A/S Fender J "boner" that many people discount (for mostly non-trad Fender J looks) and turns it to 11 through my redefinition. (super boner?…) ah, no - but the exaggerated upper horn of the A/S is how it got that nickname. Mine is a bit more spear than …. you know. Anyway, it's an example of a really good design that wasn't accepted because of the retro desire in everyone wanting a "classic" J. Life's successes are always about proper timing...

I've decided the hs bevel needs a bit curvier arch, so not finished yet! I sent my hs/fb artwork to my decal guy today, and started work cutting the router template (neck pocket/pu's) which is my least favorite but most critical part of the build for me. (I don't build my own necks - I work w/a luthier who builds to my specs) To me a tight neck joint and a perfect-fit pu cavity are focal points of the builders skills/attention to detail which is both aesthetic and functional at once. I always look there first when I start scrutinizing details of an instrument.

dude! start your own company!

That is the plan Stan - actually I have my company (Gildaxe) as a launching pad for these custom builds. I've done a few now and want to finish the Supernova before I up the ante. My dream plan is to do a limited edition of both the Supersonic and the Supernova, maybe 5 each in a very specific pallet of colours for each model. After scoring so high w/the Supersonic (it is an awesome instrument!), I'm putting all money on the table that the Supernova will join the family as an equal and unique addition. If you call a bass Super_ _ _ _ it needs to walk the walk!

I had to share this (from another thread) - it's an Italian Manne (pronounced Mah-nay) Soulmover and it is sooooo beautiful. (it has moved my soul!) They beat me to the punch for a 3rd P/J Supersomething… it's like a Ducate - so Italian! Love it!

Totally, its pretty much exactly what I did with my Ash and Acrylic build. Maybe thats why I love the design of yours so much. I added a similar cut out on the arm rest too.

However with that, I started by drawing up a shape/design I liked, then once I had a rough idea for a shape, I then draw it to roughly fit over the standard fender p-bass shape. So the distance across the middle is similar, and the body length, so it will have the same ergonomics.

Then with the horns you can really put your own mark on it. I love the sweeping curve between your two 'horns'.

I don't usually like pickguards, but when I do, it's when they accent a theme just like this. Love the upper horn, too.

Late to the party but just wanted to say that I'm really digging this design!

Parts of the body shape, particularly the horns, remind me of a specific 80's model but I can't remember which one or who made it. I wanna say Washburn?... or maybe Guild?

Completely my own unsolicited opinion but I would vote for no bridge cover. It just strikes me as anachronistic with how ultra modern the rest of the design is. (Just my humble opinion though)

Love your other stuff and I can't wait to see how this one turns out!

Thanks man - after watching the Frankie Goes To Hollywood vid when I started this I remembered the few things I liked about the 80's… for sure it was the decade of the bass - bass out front in music, bass technology, guys like Steinberger and Kubicki and Status etc - if it just wasn't for that "there you go again" guy...

Anyway, that's the beauty of covers.., 2 screws and they're off! I dig the design element aspect of it on but as it's usually the very last thing to consider I'll cross that bridge when I get to it!
