Metal came from surf? Rockabilly may be the child of surf and country, but metal? Please draw me the family tree, and in my head I don't see that.

I've always thought that punk and hippies has too much in common not to be related somehow, but mostly for the anitestablishment views, DIy ethic, and how commonly they broke the previous generations rules. Sunshine 9f your Love (cream ) and Submission (sex pistols) are more closely musically related than my be first obvious.... but that seems more blues to me than surf.

Rockabilly actually came from the same roots as rock. Country boys who grew up on bluegrass and found electric instruments. They come from the Jerry Lee Lewis style.
I doubt anyone can draw an accurate map of musical styles. Certainly each is influenced by multiple predecessors, so I don't think you will find any straight lines. How about jazz came from martial music?
Yep, that's what it was. In the late 19th century, martial music was the pop music of the day. John Phillip Sousa was the big rock star. In the deep south, black musicians who couldn't get formal training and were usually using cast off band instruments were playing their version of martial music. That became Dixieland, which evolved into various forms of jazz.
Those other black musician had picked up guitars and were doing the old African field chants. That eventually became blues. Now you have some white boys that liked the blues, but came from a bluegrass and country background and out pops the early versions of rock and rockabilly. Once Bill Haley and the Comets was classified as rock, but now we would call it rockabilly.
So, in reality, metal, surf, rock, and most popular music evolved from these roots.
