I love this track, am 38 years old, and I think I heard it in the movie E.T. the first time. I'm almost positive it's in there, but haven't seen it in years to know for sure.

I figured it was kinda the inverse; band had a rockin' instrumental and a drummer who insisted on getting writing credit for one of their songs.

About a month ago I sold my last 4x10 bass cab to the nephew of the original drummer for the Trashmen, IMO still the baddest ride beat ever recorded. They were local boys in case your wondering.

I think the songwriting session went something more like this:

"Hey guys, the Rivingtons have these two songs 'Mama-Oom-Mow-Mow' and 'The Bird's the Word'. Why don't we put them together, speed it up a bit and pass the song off as our own?"

I think the Rivingtons probably weren't that weirded out by whichever member wrote the song originally. It's a common practice in doo-wop to have the bass singing nonsense syllables as the foundation of a song. They just took that concept and made a full song out of it.

I was listening to "Rocket to Russia," back in about 1978 or so, in about 9th grade. I couldn't believe that record. I loved every single moment of it, and still do.

The Ramones changed my life forever.
