Surviving without tort

So tonight is the first night in 20 years that I won’t have a tort-equipped bass. I downsized, or maybe right-sized, from seven to two basses over the past two years, and neither of my current ones sport tort. Well, I do still have tort guards for a Stingray and a Jazz Bass, so I guess I could just look at them if I get desperate. In all seriousness, it feels a little bizarre!

Congrats on getting down to two basses. Do neither of your basses have pickguards that you could change to tort? I know I have a AM Pro Jazz that I keep mainly because its Candy Apple Red that I would probably only get rid of if I really need the money/space.

My P bass is black & maple, so I guess I could try. Thanks.

Certainly no tort needed on such a config. IMO the pickguard should suit the body and neck. Other colors warrant other choices. Generally black/white/black or white pearl work well. Some look best with aged pearl, abalone, gold flake, or even tort.

Neither of the two basses I still own, or the last two I sold, have pickguards at all. And as I don't particularly like tort anyway I have never owned a single bass with a tort guard in more than 45 years of playing. So it's perfectly possible to live without it.

Of course, if you do like it, there are plenty of aftermarket guards around...
