SVT 7Pro compared to SVT Classic

I bought a new 7Pro Rev C00 early this year. Right about that time the band I was playing in was winding down so I only played a few gigs with it and had no problems.

Fast forward to now...I've played 3 gigs with the new band and the last 2 the amp started cutting out. The second gig it cuts out completely, no sound and lights blinking in unison...3rd gig I hear it cutting out near the end of the first set and hook up my back up head during break.

I'm going to send it in to be repaired, but Im thinking about selling it once I get it back.

So, what I would like to know is...will an SVT Classic give me the volume I have with the 7Pro? The 7Pro is 1000 watts and Classic is 300 watts but all tube. I play thru an 810 Classic cab.

Uh yeah. Man, both those amps through an 810 are going to be punishingly loud. I wouldn't want to stand in front of that box and try and discern which is louder.

So SAD.. because i wanted to maybe get one of these. But there are just so many reports that i read on this amp & and the numerous failures.. I have other Ampeg gear that just keeps going and going . But this #7 seems cursed

I played one of these at GC and almost bought it. .I loved the tone of it... Its ampeg all the way... But I keep reading these threads so i halt on pulling out my credit card.. .I really want this to get fixed because i would buy one in a second if i had the freed up cash at the time...


I wonder if it is something common that is triggering the failures thru all the REVs????. ??? Maybe a chassis standoff that is shorting to the PCB???
or something that is somehow being overlooked by engineering..

It is something that doesn't manifest itself in the vast majority of the 7Pro's out there. Yes, it's happening more often than one would like, but remember, people are much more prone to complaining than praising in these forums.

I bought mine from an Ampeg Dealer and there's an Authorized Service Center here so I feel I'm covered. :)

I would love to have the classic SVT but I get SO close to the tone with the 7Pro at only 15lbs, I had to have one.

If it wigs you out to do the 7 Pro, Kirk, I would recommend trying the PF800. Almost sounds as good as the 7 Pro, 800w, and exceedingly few problems reported on here in the last year and a half.

I'm with you. I REALLY want one but I can't bring myself to buy one.

I know everybody says it's really not an issue, but let's be realistic. There are a lot a reports of issues with these. Way more than any other amp manufacturer out there. Tell me it's because they sold way more of these. I don't care. It's clearly an issue. There is no way I could trust it on a gig.

Ya, that's exactly why I got the 7 Pro when I already had a PF800. Needed something rack mountable for when we have to stick gear in a trailer. It was between that and the 4 Pro, and light weight won out. As for being worried about it, if it breaks on me, it won't be the first time I've ever had an amp poop the bed on me during a gig. I've had the best amps in the world do that to me.

I do admit I keep a Tone Hammer 500 around "just in case". ;)

I have had 3 brand new Ampegs crap out on me in the last 2 years! One a SVT , one a V4B and the last one a SVT 3 PRO, and other than the PF500 that I bought in the last few months I will not buy another new Ampeg. It is just not worth the money...

Wow, that's surprising. So much so I have to question whether its user error of some sort. Ive played ALOT of ampegs and only ever had one bite it.

Ps... not trying to be insulting. Just seems really odd.

This is why a good statistician knows that the larger your sample group, the more accurate your conclusions.

I will not begrudge you your empirical evidence, and the caution it has instilled in you; but from here, that just sounds like some phenomenal bad luck. IMHO
