SVT-VR: The Definitive Thread

At 2K I don't think many players will be buying these, hence probably not a large used market for them. Used Classics and AV Classics go from 9 bills to 1300, depending on condition. It may affect them slightly but I'd but not that much. Also, I doubt if Ampeg would have put out the VR if it killed off the Classic and AV heads.

Would a SVT-CL with a SVP-CL preamp sound like the SVT-RV you think?

I'd think it'd get you there. I've been using an SVP-CL into the power amp in on an SVT-II.

You know what I've found though? I can tweak the SVT-II pre section to sound nearly identical to the SVP-CL in A/B comparisons. And, in the context of a band situation I really can't tell any difference.

Still want a VR though!

IMO, this thread will be worthy of its title when PBG provides a critique. I'd pay a $2.00 for that review. Now if we can only find 1,000 other TBer's who feel the same...

I know of a review from a certain suspect French Canadian you all might be interested in....

Just kidding, I'm also looking forward to finally seeing a thorough review of the VR...

Can someone verify that the VR only has the standard 2 and 4 ohm taps or did they add a 8 ohm option? Thinking of hooking this amp up to my 8 ohm SWR 12 Stack with out having to rewire the speakers...

I was tempted to get an SVP-CL, but, meh, i like SVT-II too much, how similar are we talking sound-wise? How did you setup the controls to get the vintage sound on your II?

Cheers

Maybe sales of the CL and AV were waning? The VR could be viewed by Ampeg as the replacement for one or the other or both. All speculation on my part. I'm sure whichever sells best will remain.
The AV and CL are just the same, appart from asthetics.

The VR has been released probably from the high interest in the SVP-CL preamp, and from the high interest in the vintage SVT sound, im not sure if it'll be used to replace the CL and AV, i doubt it really, but i recon it will lower thier sales of those quite a bit.

i recon (sic)

Did a Britisher just say "reckon"? :rollno:

I'm signing on this thread. Curious to see what happens to the other all-tube SVTs, especially. If those get eliminated, the price on the VR would probably have to come down. Here's hoping that if that happens, the quality doesn't go down with it.

I agree the II sounds great. I have an SVP-CL so I thought it'd be an interesting experiment. I'd say, like hard to tell them apart. Like so close, it wasn't worth putting the SVP-CL in the rack with the II. I'm on the road until the weekend so I'll follow-up on your settings ? when I return.

I have read here that the SVT-II does sound more vintage than a 2 pro and the preamp section of both amps is different. I also have read that the SVP-CL sounds more vintage than the SVP-PRO which is the preamp circut of the 2 Pro. My question is:
Is the SVP-CL Preamp the same as the one inside the original SVT-II or how different are they?

There are several threads detailing the SVP-CL. To answer your question no, the SVP-CL and the pre in the SVT-II are not the same. There was an SVT-IIP made for a period of time though.

I believe the SVT-II has one more (3) 12AX7s then the SVP-CL's 2.

Here's a comparison of the comparable, listed specs of the tone circuits omitting the ranges not found on both units; ie graphic, ultra low setting and bright that are not found on both units:

SVP-CL ULTRALOW: -20dB @ 600Hz
SVT-II ULTRALOW: -20dB @ 600Hz

SVP-CL ULTRAHIGH: +16dB @ 8kHz
SVT-II ULTRAHIGH: +20dB @ 8KHz Volume Control Dependent

SVP-CL BASS: +17dB / -13dB @ 20Hz
SVT-II BASS: +/-12dB @ 40Hz

SVP-CL/SVT-II (same)
MIDFREQ: +/-20dB @ 220Hz, 450Hz, 800Hz, 1.6kHz, or 3kHz

SVP-CL: TREBLE: +15dB / -20dB @ 7kHz
SVT-II: TREBLE +/-12dB @ 5KHz

The specs won't tell you what they sound like though. In summary they both sound like SVTs. With things set about the same, I'd say the II has a little more high end "air" or brighter or "in your face" treble. The SVP-CL a little more pronounced bass. Like I said in a post above, I've been able to set the II to sound very much like the SVP-CL. A little harder to go the other way though.

The context of this is with the SVP-CL through the power section of the SVT-II. The SVP-CL has whatever tubes came in it. The pre tubes in the SVT-II are old and I have no idea anymore as to what ones are in there.

In fact, the SVP-CL preamp is THE preamp from channel 1 of a vintage SVT..... but using 1/2 12AU7/ 1/2 12AX7 in place of each 12DW7...

There are some enhancements, but all can be switched out to the basic original circuit......

So if it "sounds like an SVT", that might not be too large a surprise.......

Couldn't agree more about it being "THE preamp"...:D
