Sweeppicking after playing only 193 days

Poor AlphaMale. It must be tough being as to man what wolf is to dog and learning to sweep in the very impresive short time of 193 days.

A quick question though. Were those consecutive days or business days? One needs this kind of acurate info in order to better calculate how far behind him we really are.

For example I have been playing for 13149 consecutive days but a bit shorter than that if we are speaking of business days as I would occasionally take Sunday off.

well, I could sweep pick after 177 days (it could have been 178 but the leap year confused me)...

and it wasn't a waste of time at all like you cynics are saying because it impressed 73.4% of the people in my local guitar shop 96.8% of the time

the other 26.6% of people weren't impressed because A. they had learned in less than 176 days, and B, they did it faster while pulling a better face

it didn't get me in a band or impress anyone who didn't play bass, funnily enough

after 68 days of not sweep picking, my ability to go 'wibbly-dibbly-wooo' up and down on the bass was down 47%, with an impressiveness factor proportionately decreased linearly... my face pulling capacity remained roughly the same but my social standing amongst spotty virginal guitar shop inhabitants plummeted... so let that be a lesson

a guitar playing friend of a friend got so far into sweep picking (without learning to play anything else properly) that his friends all named him 'Arpeggio Dave'... now Arpeggio Dave might like the name, but I noted a hint of derision every time he was mentioned... don't be the Argeggio Dave of the bass world

HAHHAAHHAHAHAHAA

lol

Everyone knows 62% of all statistics are made up on the spot. I'm willing to bet only 22.7% of your statistics were accurate. LOL :p :D :D

Sorry, but i'm laughin at how patethic you are. ;)

"after only 193days.." almost like it's a good thing.. :D

You see, sweeping is a complete useless technique on both guitar and especially the bass.

Before u even think about learning difficult and useless techniques you should master your relative pitch, be able to hear a group of notes in your head and blatantly play them straight of on the bass..
If you cant do that then ur still pretty bad.

You should learn a ******** of theory and be able to improvise very very well aswell.

Why learn this before sweeping? Because these are useful skills that u will always have advantage of, sweeping works good if u wanna annoy ur bandmates or audience with the nasty sound that comes out of it.. :smug:

I already do know a ******** of theory. That's why I teach it to kids at my school. But you wouldn't know that because for some reason you assumed that I'm all tabs but I'm not. And now you have everyone agreeing with you like a ******** Spartacus or something. I know how to improvise very well and know. I am very well rounded I play in my schools band and for my church along with a death metal guitarist for hobby and the same thing with a punk band.

I love how a bunch of people attacked me for learning a new technique on bass. I assumed this forum was where people could have conversation on playing bass. Instead you judge techniques calling them useless then you guys talk about being well rounded. I'm sorry if it doesn't add up to the small amount of idiots who keep bashing sweep picking but knowing more techniques does help you become a more well-rounded bass player.

What I suggest you do lilterier is learn the philosophy of logic because you're definitely setting up a straw man, assuming thing about me and attacking things like it's fact. When someone bases their arguments off logical fallacies we call them idiots. I would really like to see you play bass since you find it so righteous to attack those who have barely been playing.

And the reason I know how long I have been playing bass due to the fact that I have the receipt on my wall from when I bought my bass.

Sweep picking sounds like sh** thats for sure,I have no use for it.

But my guitarist, who is a good guitarist both melodic and shredder respects me "only" when I shred stupidly and meaninglesly. He says WOW and there I go.When I play a funky line locked with the drums he just ignores.Thats the way other people see it.If you hold the groove, you ain't there,if you shred, you'r the man now dog! :p

Me?I prefer a groovy line over shredding.:bassist:

I prefer to think of what has been presented in response to your rather unfortunate choice of words and particularly your choice of signature as harmless ribbing. To imply that you are able to converse with some of us at the same level is insulting enough but to demand respect when clearly (and mind you regardless of how much natural talent you may or may not have) you have not spent enough time or had enough experience to make such a demand is downright foolish.

I think the message here is climb down from your high horse. You want to ask questions relative to a specific technique and want honest feedback on your progress you have but to ask, in a polite and respectful way, and you will see a much different tone in the answers. It is not that we as a group have anything against sweeping (some may have stronger feelings than others) and certainly in some situations the technique may be called for. When you come on like you have already left us all behind due to your remarkably accelerated talent you will tend to upset our delicate constitutions.

Now once again are we talking consecutive days or business days, I really want to know.

Well, I've been playing for about 20 years, and I think pretty much everyone in this thread after the OP and JimmyM and the fonz look like a bunch of know-it-all asshats--particularly lilterier and wmcjhi.

It's funny that you make fun of someone while acting like you're about 12 years old mentally, yourselves. Just food for thought.

Not sure where you got that impression. Said I was new and what I was working on. If you think I should work on something else, feel free to correct me. My post was more for putting my state of mind up as an alternative than criticizing his.
Although I do thank you for the asshat comment.

there's nothing wrong with sweep picking... if you have a huge 3 octave arpeggio to play, then it can be an appropriate technique to get that material played...

however after less than 7 months playing bass, it probably shouldn't be near the top of your 'things to learn next' list if you want to be that 'well rounded bass player'... maybe look at sweep picking after you can play regular arpeggios perfectly over the full range of the bass, with excellent technique, timbre & timing...

in all walks of life, newbies want to get straight to the flashy tricks, and are bored by the idea of having to learn the basics... (this is not a personal attack, it's human nature and we're all guilty to one extent or another, I know I was)... we all want to do the flashy stuff, but learning that first isn't usually a recipe for long term success... by all means learn a trick or two but don't make it the foundation of your playing and definitely don't make it a yardstick to measure 'how good you are'
