SWR big ben owners I need HELP!!

I just got a big ben used,,,Played just fine at his house then I played with the drummer an I heard loud pops at louder bassy volumes,,,

I took it apart an the spider was cracked,,,,

I bought a rebuilt on from swr its a BAG-END speaker 1year warranty,,,,,,

Put in the new one an still I get loud pops when I turn up the volume,(no cracks in new spk.),,,,I have a gk700 on like 3,

if someone can give me some feedback on this I would be very happy,,:hyper:I am gonna pull my hair out on this thing:confused:,,,,,

I just need to know if your unit does the same thing I have several other cabinets I dont get this loud pop sound????

grill is off,,,the speaker is original,,SWR uses a bag-end speaker in this big ben, an I just got this rebuilt one from SWR,,I also spent like 1hour on the phone with there support,,,,

so I want to talk to someone who has this unit,,,


do either of you have a big ben?

My BigBen's never give me any popping sound, even at pretty ridiculously loud volume.

If you want more help, please provide a more detail description of all the setting, equipment, environment... that are involved.

thanks guys I need to get to the bottom of this,,,
Rear ports not blocked, an grill is removed,,,
GK700rb2 head new settings are mid range,,,

I have a Ibanez Active bass,,,but also a jazz fretless,,and a peavey with emg pickups,,,,

I can get the pop on all of the basses but The easiest way is with the Ibanze with the bass control turned up on the bass all other bass controls mid-range,,,,

you guys have never experienced this?

I can get it to pop Very easy if I turn up the volume on the bass,, mute the strings an pop down on the strings with the palm of my hand,,,,,,this sudden thump will cause this loud pop noise,,,
The hartke doesn't do it an my other swr cabinet doesn't,,

I will try to post it on utube if I Can figure that out??

My first thought is over excursion, voice coil hitting the back-plate ...

Please describe the actually sound more.
Is it a metal against metal sound? Metal against concrete?
Is it like tapping a pen against the wooden table top?
How about the duration of the noise? Is it just one loud pop or is it continuous?
Do you see the speaker cone jumping like crazy?

If it is over excursion, you will either need to change your EQ or put in a high pass filter. Or get more cabs to produce the loud volume you required. Do you actually use that kind of tone in your music?

It sounds like a loud crack or a loud slam of a book on a table,,,

Have you ever heard this from your big ben? with the lows an volume turned up???

Sounds like your overexerting the speakers, I could be wrong.

I was under the impression that sound has more to do with the cab's and speaker design than the actual size of the speaker.

Did you think buying an 18 would just be like a sub hit or something?

Granted, I could completely be wrong in my earlier assessment but that's what I've gathered form the speaker wisdom here.

I have never heard this pop sound In any of my other speakers maybe I will go to samash or somewhere an see if it is inherent to an 18" cab

just got off the phone again with bag-end they don't recone it was a new spk. the only diff is the warranty,,,,

as for what is going on the guy said there is nothing wrong,, I am just tring to get to much out of this speaker,,,

he said that the plastic piece inside around the voice coil is hitting the magnet at higher volumes,,he suggested a compressor limiter,,,,

Any one familiar with this compressor limiter thing?

A compressor stabilizes volume and "smooths" a note’s "attack" by dampening its onset and amplifying its sustain. Notable compressor effects: Boss CS-3, Keeley Compressor, MXR Dyna Comp.

Sound like your pushing too much volume.
