SWR Grand Prix Pre

[C-60 Bass]

Just picked up one of these (green front / stencilling) '93.

I'm looking for a recommendation for a good power amp to match it with and experiences regarding input sensitivity etc. Using an 800w 610.

Also any other experiences / tips with this pre are welcome!

I had one of those, great preamp! If you boost the low mids by 8dB at 250Hz whilst having the rest of the EQ and Aural Enhancer at 0 you'll get essentially flat response. The highpass filter on the bass knob is useful if your power amp doesn't have one. I put a NOS 5751 in mine instead of the original 12AX7 which gave it a fatter cleaner smoother sound.

I had a Mackie M1400 and then a QSC PLX 3002 (which we still have as the main amp at the Barefaced factory).

I used an SWR Stereo 800 power amp with a Grand Prix for years. Loud, clean, efficient, and trouble free.

Just tried a NOS JAN 5751 and getting a bad 60 cycle hum (even with no bass plugged in. Get louder when raising the master. Bad tube? Others (12AX7) all ok?

If the original tube doesn't have the hum, then it seems like that particular NOS tube is causing the issue…. any tube has the potential to go awry.
