stunning, i love my sx (they come "in the rough" you have to work with them like adjust the nut and the action e.t.c but they are built as well as mexico fenders -in general- there are some that stink and many that are great, try before you buy)

SX Pino Palladino precision anyone?

I have an SX Jazz and an SX fretless (P-bass) and I love them both. In my opinion, the build quality is slightly below MIM Fenders. Though they usually need some setup right out of the box. Some even need fret leveling (though both of mine are fine).
Stock SXs and stock MIM Fenders are close (again in my opinion). If I had to rate them, the SX would be a very close second to a MIM Fender. Once an SX is modded however, they can hod their own with a MIM Fender any day.
My Jazz is modded (with Fender Noisless pups) and sounds great. Similar to a Fender sound. My fretless is stock. The unknown brand of P-bass type pups are a bit weak in the output department. But the bridge and tuners are solid. I will eventually change the pups and probably the bridge and pots as well.
The bottom line: an SX bass, for about half the price, is comparable to a MIM Fender in a lot of ways. But, it's not a Fender. It's a cheaper alternative that stands on its own pretty well. If you're thinking you can buy an SX and get a "cheaper" Fender forget it. SX is SX and Fender is Fender. SX basses are made in China and Korea and Fenders are made in the USA, Japan and Mexico, and elsewhere if you include Squier. Quality control varies in all these countries (even in the USA and Japan). Fender tries to maintain a certain standard with all its instruments (sometimes it succeeds, sometimes it doesn't). SX does too believe it or not. But Fender is a large company with many resources, Rondo Music is a small family owned business that makes low-end instruments. They are marketing to different audiences and their prices and quality reflect this.

Thanks for the info on the SX basses! I appreciate all the information on them. I have been thinking of buying one after hearing all the positive remarks (espcially a fretless, because i would be a noob on the fretless). I think that i am going to probably buy a good Fender and a cheap SX fretless.
I just wish i could try one out close to where i live just so that i could have my own opinion.

Fender Japan now offers a Pino'esque P-bass now (model number is PB62-PP...which I gather stands for Pino Palladino), but I've only seen it on Japanese sites so it would likely have to be imported (not difficult):

how is jim deacon getting away with the headstock? its identical to fender, shouldn't fender be taking legal action? 
Some sites say they have a whole list of dealers, but this is just to cover up that they don't actually sell them, hardly anyone does. They might be selling them, but the shop won't even have any! Headstock similar to Fender? There is about 1000 identical headstocks to that as well matito.

Again my opinion. More power to the SX lovers I think they are fine basses but I wanted to give a flipside opinion on the MIM comparison.
But some Fender MIM's are not that good, some are great. If you can mod something to sound way better than it's rival for the same price, your gonna choose the SX and mod it!
Actually I have yet to see an SX (although I have not touched a ton) that rivaled the MIM construction wise so I wouldn't buy the modded SX. That is just my opinion though.
Also resell is much better on the Fender. It would be very tough to get the extra $150 you spent on the SX back out of it. Where if I bought a used MIM I could get almost full used value out of it when I sold it.
I just am not one who believes in spending a ton on modding. I would rather take teh $150 I would spend modding and buy a better bass that didn't require it.

Well loads of people on this site would happily buy an SX including the extra mods at a higher price, I'm sure.

Trademarks are enforced on a territory-by-territory basis. If Fender doesn't have a trade dress registration for its headstock in the UK, it's legally ok for people to copy it.
