SX Pirate Bass???

So, I bought a Pirate about a month ago and quite honestly I love it, it feels and plays like a Fender Aerodyne, and the best part: It DIDN'T have the crappy red everywhere! The pickups were both black, the binding was black, the nut was black graphite, and the inlay wasn't there. the cool thing is that in the wood there is a red under-layer, which in my opinion looks amazing.
when i first got it, i had to do a little work on the frets as they were sharp around the upper frets but thats what happens when you buy a bass for $120. other than that i love it, i've gigged with it twice and there have been at least 30 people that have come up to me say how much they love it.

This bass has made me an Sx bassist for life

I LOVE the look of this thing!! It doesn't look kiddy-oriented to me at all, in fact, I think it would make a pretty kick ass modern rock, punk bass?? I'd either have to replace the J pup cover with a red one or replace the P Pup cover with a black one, for consistency's sake. I LOVE the feel of a jazz bass, and I love the little red stains within the wood grain. I want one SOOOOO bad!! Does anyone have any experience with this??

Say what you will, but I think this has the raw materials for a truly kick-butt custom bass. Outside of cosmetics like a red strap or other decorations, I'd note that most likely it uses a standard SX single coil J in the bridge position. Of course I love the tone of those but hate the hum. And it's made worse in that with a P/J the P pickup is already a humbucker. That means you can't get rid of the hum with both pickups on.

My solution: (are you ready for this?) Buy a Q-Tuner Jazz humbucking pickup in clear plastic with red coils! Is that too cool for words or what! Those things have uber clear and bright tone and are just the noise-free thing to mix with the standard P sound!

My only gripe, of course, is that it's missing a string. Why do 4 string guys seem to rule the world? If this were a 5er I'd be on line right now pulling the trigger! Love it.

I will say yes to the body if they changed out the P cover for a black one. But I cannot get past the childish inlay, ugly red binding, and stupid headstock decal.

4-strings rule the world because 4 is considered "the norm". People consider 5 to be "metal territory" and 6 to be "jazz territory". I personally hate this stereotype, but let's face it. How many big-ticket punk bands can you name who use a 5-string bass instead of drop-tuning. I mostly use my 5 so I don't have to drop-tune, but that's beside the point. People make more 4-bangers because they simply sell more.

that's interesting! I wonder if there's a way to request the version you got?
