SX Pirate Bass???

Anyways, I agree with ya Jordasch, the inlays ruin it for me. It has some interesting things about it, but, eh, not enough.

Things i like:
The Strat jack is awesome.
The red pickup cover is also awesome. I would almost buy that crappy bass just to take the red cover to put on another bass.
The painted neckback is a nice touch. It's not often that you see painted necks on cheap basses.
The finish on the body is kind of cool, but really not my thing personally.
The headstock is kind of cool. I am not normally a fan a Jazz bass copy headstocks, as i prefer the authentic shape, but this headstock shape is tasteful IMO.

Things i can't stand:
The bridge pickup doesn't match the neck pickup... Why would anybody want mismatched pickup covers???
The red binding looks kind of cool, but i hate binding with a passion.
The inlay kills that neck for me. First off, it looks hideous!
Second, i can't stand anything other than proper dot inlays on basses. I think it would look much nicer with red dot inlays and no binding.
This is strictly a personal thing, but i don't care for that style of tuner. I would prefer the traditional clover key style

Why is the nut red??? Is is made out of red plastic or something? I would want to get a bone nut in there ASAP.

Would i buy it? If it had a fretless ebony fingerboard, (i don't play fretted basses...) no binding, no ugly inlay/pirate theme, and a red bridge pickup cover, then yes. Otherwise no.

The Pirate Bass pictured in the Spanish SX website holds back on the red plastic, much improving the looks IMO.

The "pirate series" also includes clones of the Strat, SG and Les Paul guitars, and to my eyes the whole "bare blackened wood" look works much better on the countoured Gibson body shapes than the flat-top Fenders. The Les Paul is actually quite fetching, in a sort of minimalistic cheapo-chic way.

At least they look more original than generic copies of the real thing. I'm sure Link Removed would approve!

Does anyone know the size of the neck pocket on this one? I emailed Kurt and I haven't received any message back. I would buy this bass in an instant if I knew I could replace the neck easily.

Its a poor man's aerodyne my friend, and a lot uglier. Just my opinion one.

That alone is tempting. One can always funkify the look.

So that's where the idea for cheap-looking red pickup covers come from! And the original inlay manages to be even uglier.

Even though the SX pirate series *is* an unoriginal carbon copy after all, I must say that I like the idea of a funky novelty theme much more on a US$100 SX than a Gibson costing, what, 15 times more?

To me a cheapy gets a free pass being a bit weird and funny looking, it only adds to the pawn-shop charm. But at heirloom-grade prices? No wonder the Gibson Voodoos were a short-running special series and no one seems to miss them much.

Now, if only SX made a pirate Eb-3 shorty...

I still like the Pirate bass, though I'm not sure I'd buy one myself....though that body, with a bound and blocked neck....

And a 3 dollar can of Krylon spray paint for plastic will easily remedy the red pup cover.....

So, I bought a Pirate about a month ago and quite honestly I love it, it feels and plays like a Fender Aerodyne, and the best part: It DIDN'T have the crappy red everywhere! The pickups were both black, the binding was black, the nut was black graphite, and the inlay wasn't there. the cool thing is that in the wood there is a red under-layer, which in my opinion looks amazing.
when i first got it, i had to do a little work on the frets as they were sharp around the upper frets but thats what happens when you buy a bass for $120. other than that i love it, i've gigged with it twice and there have been at least 30 people that have come up to me say how much they love it.

This bass has made me an Sx bassist for life
