A lot of positive things have been said about SX and Rondo so I am going to take the plunge. My 12 year old wants the pirate bass http://www.rondomusic.net/pbg2.html for his birthday. My boy is paying for 1/2 of it so if anyone bought one let me know what you think. I will be ordering it within the next week. FWIW no one has given a review of this model that I can find on the board...I searched "essex" and "essex pirate" and I found out it was ugly...which I already knew:smug: ...and that's about it. If there is a review, please send me to it. Any thoughts on this model is appreciated.

been through a few SX basses. I'm sure I'll buy another at some point. Kurt at Rondo is easy to deal with(fast shipping, takes care of any problems) and the basses are Ok out of the box. With a little work they can be great basses. Recently sold a p copy on here and it was a great player. Be a great oppurtunity to show your son how to do his own adjustments/setup.

That may have the side effect of turning him into one of us. Don't know if you're ready for that. I know it would make me proud the day my son had more basses than me.

Thanks for the feedback so far...so no one seems to actually own one yet...Looks like I may be the first!

aproud1: I agree on having him get with the set-up/maintenance program. That was actually part of the reason for me to look at the SX brand...Very important skill to have. He's always messing with stuff...he has my old Squire and has taken it apart and put it together again already. I'd just as soon have him do that to something inexpensive than real expensive if you catch my drift...I'll let you know what I do...

This is a pretty nice bass. It sounds great! I will put some sound samples on my website in the next few days. After a 1/2 turn on the neck to lower the action I used it today with some students. Several of them tried it and thought it was really cool. The neck is P size than J. No dead spots or buzzing. Fretwork was neat. The open finish is really different..."Emo meets Goth" was one student's comment. The body actually has red streaks running through the gaps in the wood...really unique especially for this price $170 US delivered. Close Up.jpg

The red binding and p/u cover is not as overbearing as it appears on the Rondo site. I noticed one "bump" in the plastic binding but I had to look real hard...It's actually pretty classy looking in person.

The hardware seems decent. Enclosed tuners (kinda gotoh looking) and a suprisingly beefy bridge. The Strap buttons are tiny. I put straplocks on it...The knobs are pure cheap plastic but they turn very smooth. The nut is red plastic. The "strat Style" input jack is cool! Really edgy design...I have not opened the electronics cover yet to check out wiring but no electrical buzzes...

I'd buy this again...if this is typical of SX quality this is the best value I have found. I'll get some other pics soon and let you know when I get some sounds up...
