SX Ursa 6-string Jazz bass

OK I need some help!!!! Now they don't have any more @ rondo music and they sent me a reply saying they wont have anymore till end of summer or fall (CRAP) does anyone know anyplace other than rondo to get one. I was hoping my traben tribal sun 5 string would have sold by now($200). There no way i can wait that long, i may have to check out the Douglas 6 string. or if there is anyone that has 2 SX 6's and may want to sell or trade one

Rondo Rule: Ya snooze, Ya lose!

Tell me about it. I'm still patiently waiting for them to get 5 string P-basses back again! I saw a photo of one someone bought quite a while ago and had a bad GAS attack over it! Right now I'm reworking a Squier P 5er to get by until my SX ship comes in!

Douglas gets high marks here but they are active and quite a different animal from the SX Fender clone six thing. Unfortunately, all other six string Fender clones cost an arm and a leg.

PM'ed.

so after some time with mine, ive decided i like it quite a bit. i can get a sound i like no problem. buuuuut its a little too low output for my tastes. might be upgrading the neck pickup to something hotter. and still considering dropping a humbucker in the bridge position.

Guys I read through this WHOLE thread and now know exactly what mods I want to do to this bass (including some additional thanks to my woodworking friend). There's just one problem...THEY'RE SOLD OUT! Missed buying it by a day. I didn't know they were so limited! And I, too emailed and was told the same thing. No earlier than summer. I simply do not want to wait that long. Can anyone tell me where I can pick one up? Thanks much!

I can recommend the Douglas 826. Great bass.

Well I sent my traben 5 string home with a guy to check out, He Fell in love with it when he saw it. Now when he gets his tax check next week i'll will have the money to get Me a Ursa 6 from one of the awesome TBers that have contacted me. If you have an extra one and have price let me thanks. Have a Grate weekend

So here's an SX Ursa 6 w/ stock strings (new set on order) I ordered this from Ebay ~ 3 wks ago (from Rondo) after reading this entire thread. You totally sold me on a "cheap" bass that's pretty damned decent :D. Clean enough but man, I see what you mean about the buzzing! I made a new pickguard from some stock aluminum & pseudo block inlays from a black vinyl sheet (I honestly loathe Fender bass shapes but a 6 string Jazz for this price was too much too pass up). I’m really mulling over the pre-amp install and some frets really need leveling and attention :rollno: . Dissection- Crimson Towers (Bass Guitar Adaptation - Bass Cover) ver.wmv - YouTube - YouTube Fun stuff!

Nice ;)

I should be getting my 6 string back any day. A buddy of mine put the active electronics (artec) in for me. He said he was going to have to route it out a little bit, in the cavity to get the battery in. He has already tried the electronics and the Artec with the stock pick-ups work. He has not told me how much distortion, if any that it makes as of yet. It sounded great with the stock pickups in it, just weak. I like my basses hot. Just like my women;). I have to get a dual knob, the other 2 stock knobs work fine. The only modification that was done to the stock bass, is just a little routing out for the battery under the pick guard, and of course the new control knob. I will make a video and let you guys hear what it sounds like. I will post a link as soon as I get it back.

so i bought one of these SX Ursa 6 strings because I couldn't pass up the deal. I'd really like to give her an active PJ set up though, is that possible?

I thought about this and it's not as simple as you think. Of course it is a Jazz bass so it always has offset body and thinner neck, though the SX necks are thicker than what I'd imagine a "real" Jazz neck would be.

But all that aside. The basic change wouldn't be bad IF you could find pickups. Since the P pickup is in the pickguard a new custom pickguard and a bathtub rout covers that. It's also best if you can put in a humfree J in the bridge position. The active part is easily dealt with by dropping in an Audere Jazz pre.

But the catch is just where does one find a 6 string split P pickup? Not so simple! Custom? Sure, but probably some $$$.

The next thing is the Jazz bridge pickup. The SX 6er pickups have ears in non-standard positions and as far as I know there is only one replacement pickup that fits and it's a single coil jobbie too.

So if you are willing to live with single coil hum in the J I guess that's OK.

So, it's mostly about pickups, and if you can find them, the rest should be pretty straightforward. But what I did to make mine more p-like is to install a series/parallel switch. Sure, not a real P sound but better and MUCH easier to do!

I just wanted to let you guys know it is possible to put Active Electronics in the six string and still keep it stock looking. I kept the stock pick ups which are just fine and added the (ARTEC-SE2A) to it which cost me a grand total of $20.00. The (ARTEC-SE2A) fit right in without doing anything. A good friend, Les Davis routed a hole under the pickguard just big enough to insert the battery. As You can see the stock knobs fit fine, I just need a set for the 3rd knob. I left a previous link for you guys to go to which also shows the schmatic on how to install.

This (ARTEC-SE2A) brought my 6 string pickups to life. It is not distorting, even though I have not even shielded it yet. It is clean. The Best $20.00 that I have spent in a good while :-) This is an Economy bass for me. I now have less than $250.00 in it at this point. I put $34.00 in new strings and $20.00 in the Active electronics. I will order the knobs for about $2 maybe $3.00 and have me a Boutique Bass:cool: Still looking to put a new pickguard on it, I have not found a color yet that hoses me down.

Sounds sweet that the ARTEC is working out for you. Some have reported great results with a drop-in Audere (just replace the whole control plate) preamp, but of course that is more serious money. I'm toying with idea of an Artec pre for one of my SX 6ers, but so far I'm sort enjoying the idea of a passive Fender clone 6er since I've got plenty of standard active 6ers that do everything I want in active mode. But still, a really nice active 6 bar bass could get some play time too. Since I've got one SX 6er with flats and one with rounds, I'm thinking the one with rounds might use the active pre best.

Personally I went with tort! :)
