SX Ursa 6-string Jazz bass

Just tried my 6-er with my new IEMs that are good down to 20Hz, (I can hear 10hz buzzing away on on them, but the volume comes up to normal levels at 20), and boy, did I have thunder in my ears. None of the speakers in my rig go that low, and the PA has a 40Hz cutoff going to the 4-18s under the stage to protect them from frequencies below the tuning of the ported boxes they are in.

The first thing I noticed is that I had to turn the bass control down on the Aviom unit that drives the IEMs, since I'm not used to hearing the fundamental of notes on the B string. I suppose I could get uset to it, but it was uncomfortable and disconcerting.

The point is that I don't think I have ever heard the fundamental of my B string clearly, just the upper harmonics of the low notes. Hearing the full depth of the notes, I don't know if I like it, but it's nice to know it is there.

"The truth? You can't handle the truth!"

I like the B string. On playing Rock songs, or blues songs, there is nothing sweeter than letting the lead guitar solo and just stripe the strings off the neck and then knock the absolute bottom of a song out with the B string.

Do not think the bass is not important in a band :-) Even though your fingers don't move as fast as a lead guitartist, You and the drumer carry the band :-) You know you are doing a good job when you look at the audience and their head is boobing, up and down. Oh Yeah!

I will be hooking up the Artec sec3a preamp on my 6 string this week. I will update on how it sounds as soon as I get it done. I had to go to radioshack to pick up a 3 conductor jack to replace the stock input jack. I hope it is as clean of a sounding preamp as I have read. If it is, I will probably put one on both my SX's and maybe my Fender Jazz. Stay tuned.:D

Looking forward to what you have to say about the Artec pre. I have been thinking about getting one for a while now, although I really like the idea of sweepable mids in the SE3P and SE3P-A. What I don't like is the idea of drilling new holes in my bass...:rollno:

As of right now, I am thinking that I will not have to change anything about the bass, The pots are way smaller so I expect the battery to go under the pots inside the cavity. I plan on trying to use the stock pickups too. I don't know how it will sound yet. This is the first time doing it.

I'd like to get a six again, after having retired my defretted Ibanez SR506 years ago in favor of playing 4s and 5s.

Are the pickups on these wide enough to cover the B and C? Can the neck handle a bridge with slightly wider string spacing? Rondo says these are 1/2" at the nut... which translates to 12.7 mm! That seems extremely tight. I've seen posts about putting a 17mm bridge on it, so I'm guessing Rondo's 1/2" is not center to center.

The neck easily handles a 17mm bridge, but I don't think it will handle anything wider. The pickups will not handle 17mm spacing. I took my pickups out and put in a set of Bartolini MK1's (run passive). I had to route out a wider opening to accommodate the Barts, but they sound really good in this bass.

Thanks for the info.

Could the stock pickups be aided by an extra magnet under the B and C ends of the pickups? I'm thinking along the lines of Dingwall's "B Booster" Kit, which simply adds more magnetic pull to the B with an extra magnet.

What brand of bridge will accommodate 17mm spacing for not-too-much cash?

My twisted mind is telling me to buy one of these and two Wilkinson 5-string split P pickups and use the two 3-pole sides to make a 6 string PJ.

Is anyone tuning theirs down, say to F#? For some reason, I'm thinking a her tuned F#-G would be more useful to me than B-C (did that for a couple years, on an Ibanez SR506. Great bass, terrible electronics package [Bart MK-1]). I also tried E-F, which made me miss being able to grab E string notes above the 5th fret on B.

I've tried to Google it but, I can't seem to fine anything on the
Dingwall's "B Booster" Kit. Can you or, someone give me more info or a link please?
Thanks
