SX Ursa 6-string Jazz bass

NBD, my basswood bodied reduced-price Ursa 2 6 3TS arrived Tuesday. I haven't done a NBD thread because I was too lazy to take the requisite pics, but I'll put a few observations here for the curious.

The new batch of these have better tuners than my Alder 3TS one does, me likey! As setup out of the box, the reponse of the higher pitched strings was a little hotter then the B, E and A, easily fixable, and actually welcome, as I need to improve the out put of my higher-pitched strings on my player. I won't comment on the tone too much because I haven't changed the strings yet... but I LIKE what I'm hearing already!

Okay, finally got a pic of basswood Ursa 2 6 3TS basically as it came out of the box:

And here it is with my first one after changing the strings, oiling the board and changing the string guides:

Interesting thing to me is, it has more interesting grain than my Alder one (at least on the back anyway).

What a yummy pair! So what's the plan? Rounds and flats? Fretted and fretless? Active and passive? I know you think like I do on this!
(mine: three burst alder SX6 in rounds, flats and fretless)

So tell us. What do you think of the basswood body?

(Love the flames on the other neck, but love the dark rosewood look too. So how many grand did it cost to get the custom flamed maple neck like that?) :)

Thanks for the kudos. I TOTALLY lucked out on the flame on that neck!

The plan for the basswood one was to next buy an ash Ursa 2 6, and swap the necks and pickguards, so I could have a 3TS 6er with blocks. But I didn't find out it was basswood until you pointed that out, after I had ordered. But unless screws start pulling out, I really like what I'm hearing, though I haven't actually spent much time playing it since the string change.

I'll probably do an update in a couple of weeks, stay tuned.

GAS and the amazing price got the better of me....just ordered a black bodied maple fretboard sixer. My current home build 6 has had a few set backs and prolly won't be ready until Easter and this sweetheart will keep me entertained in the mean time. I'm thinking of playing with pickups and electrics - this may become an upgrade mule for me.

GMC, prepare to have lots of "good value" (read "cheap") fun!

I saw the Ash Ursa 2 6 come back in stock yesterday... mine should arrive early next week. I still don't know why they don't make this in sunburst! So now I'm like approaching bassbenj's collection (not a bad thing, but I never thought I'd be here) with 2 alder/maples, 1 basswood/rosewood and now one ash/maple (with blocks, which is the one I really wanted... but in sunburst), sigh.

Pickup upgrades for Ursa 2 Sixers at Best Bass Gear:

Invalid Link Removed

Alas, no drop-in fits. Nice to know the bass is on the radar, though.

I will mention again that these:

http://www.pure-tone.com/hippo-6-string-bass-pickups/

are supposed to be drop-in for the SX 6er. I hope someone will try them. I've tried to buy but my bank won't do Visa in Asia (includes Australia) and paypal still isn't working.

Wonder if they are an improvement or not.

Big singles would be a dynamite upgrade but alas does take routing and it's routing where it shows rather than under pickguard.

OK, time for an update on my Ursa 2 6 rn 3ts. I AB'd it with my maple boarded one and, interestingly, the rn one is a little more mellow even with the new strings I put on it. The strings are the same webstrings that I have on the maple one (and the ones on the maple one are over a year old). Is this a result of the rosewood, the basswood or both? I don't know.

Both feel similar, and the only other things of note are that the intonation was a little more out on ALL of the strings than I remember on my other SX sixers and the impact of the shielding I have put on my maple board one was audibly apparent.

Also, I'm seeing what I consider to be some qc improvements since I bought my rn one. Specifically, the neck mounting plate is better centered, the black edge of the burst is wider (closer to what I see on other bursts) and the tuners are noticeably smoother. Another hardware difference, though not necessarily a qc one, is that the point on the part of the control plate that mates with the pickguard is rounded, more like a Fender, than on a lot of my other SX basses.

I can't wait to see what my Ash one will be like tomorrow when it arrives!

When I got home today, there was a box for me from rondo. I cut it open, but instead of the Ursa 2 6 Ash I ordered, there was an Ursa 2 6 rn 3ts inside! !@#$%^& I didn't even unwrap it, back in the box it went, I went to the site to tell rondo I was returning it and took it to UPS. They should get it back Wednesday. :rollno:

I might give these a shot. But first off I'm going to see if there's any reviews or opinions on Pure Tone pickups.
